An archaeometric study of the Monument to Augustus of Saint‐Bertrand‐de‐Comminges: Marble Provenance and in Situ Pigment Analysis
An in‐depth archaeometric study was undertaken on the Monument to Augustus (Saint‐Bertrand‐de‐Comminges, Occitanie, France), focusing on both the provenance of the marble and the analysis of the pigments in order to answer questions about the original layout of the Monument and the quarry(ies) that supplied the marble used to create it. A multi‐method protocol including petrography, cathodoluminescence, isotope and elemental analyses, as well as …
Göktepe Marble Identification in the Hadrian Portrait of Los Torrejones (Yecla, Murcia) and some Considerations on the Presence of this Marble in Hispania
This work characterises the high-quality white marble used in the bust of Emperor Hadrian found in the Roman villa of Los Torrejones (Yecla, Murcia). The analytical results, compared with the databases pertaining to Hispanic and Mediterranean quarry marbles, reveal its source in the quarries of Göktepe, in Muğla province, Western Turkey. The historical implications of the presence in the villa of an imperial portrait of such quality are discussed…
Addressing the controversial origin of the marble source used in the Phoenician anthropoid sarcophagi of Gadir (Cadiz, Spain)
Dating from the fifth century bce , two Phoenician anthropoid sarcophagi, a male and a female, found in Gadir (Cadiz, Spain), are so far the most ancient marble sculptures found in the Iberian Peninsula. The identification of the source of the marble used to produce them has been a subject of controversy for several decades and has recently resurfaced when it was published that they were made by Phoenician artisans using Iberian marble from Macae…
As part of the Marmora Galicia research project, focused on the provenance, use and distribution of marble in Roman times in the territory of modern Galicia, the study of the marble sarcophagus of Tui has been undertaken. Besides being a practically unpublished object, it is also of interest as it is one of the few large-size marble objects found in this territory and its study has confirmed a non-local origin for the marble used to carve it. Ind…
The Amiadoso plaque (Allariz, Ourense): New Dat…
In this paper we present a new study about the Amiadoso plaque (Allariz, Ourense) has been developed, in which this Roman object has been analysed from an interdisciplinary point of view based in the combination of stylistic and archaeometric studies of its material. Consequently, we have linked up the analysis of the different artistic phases of this piece from a formal study with the identification of the marble used, which confirms a local pro…
The marble of O Incio (Galicia, Spain): Quarries and first archaeometric characterisation of a material used since roman times
In spite of the great leap forward experienced in our understanding of the use of marble and other ornamental stones in Roman Spain, provenance studies are still quite uncommon in some territories of the Iberian Peninsula. This was the case of the northwesternmost part (modern Galicia), where no significant work had been done until now. Within the framework of an interdisciplinary study, a significant number of objects studied did not match with …
The exploitation of local stone in Roman times: The case of north-eastern Spain
As in many other areas of the Roman Empire, the exploitation of stone resources for the construction of buildings, public areas, infrastructure, sculptures, inscriptions and other objects, such as sarcophagi, was a key activity in Roman Spain from the beginning of the Roman conquest. However, the study of supply areas (the quarries) has been limited to date. Taking north-eastern Spain as a case study, this article addresses the importance of iden…
