A Chosen Few from Nineveh and Babylonia”
In the 1870s plans were made for the opening of a plaster cast museum in Spain, the Museo de Reproducciones Artísticas de Madrid. Among the exhibits from antiquity, Greco-Roman pieces had a privileged position, but from the very beginning the museum sought to offer a more complete panorama. This article discusses archival documents that demonstrate that the acquisition of representative pieces from other geographies and chronologies was one of th…
The Current Study of the Ancient Near East in Spain
In the nineteenth century in Spain there was a growing interest in the civilizations of the East—those located to the east of the Mediterranean. However, in Spain this interest did not translate into a consolidation of cuneiform studies in academia as it had done in other countries. In this article we offer some clues to help understand these two circumstances by providing an overview of the study of the ancient Near East in the Iberian Peninsula…
A Tearful and Busy Mother
As a way to explore certain aspects related to the construction of motherhood, and by extension of an ideal of femininity in ancient Mesopotamia, in this article we examine a first millennium BCE baby incantation known to us thanks to two duplicates found in the city of Assur. More specifically, we concentrate on the two references to the mother in this text. In the first one the mother herself cries when she sees that she cannot stop her baby’s …
Facial Decorations under the Microscope
This paper focuses on a selection of Phoenician-Punic artifacts from the western Mediterranean dating from the 7th to 2nd centuries b.c. It examines some examples of coroplastic art (musician figurines, masks, and protomae) and ostrich eggshells bearing facial decorations, and discusses the different ways in which these decorative motifs have been interpreted in modern scholarship and highlights the centrality of sex and gender in most of these t…

Arqueología, Viajes Y Docencia Entre Oriente Y Occidente
International networks and the shaping of nineteenth-century Spanish collections
In this essay we discuss two examples of the influence exerted by the advice of scholars from the United Kingdom on the shaping and management of Spanish collections – those at the Museo de Reproducciones Artísticas de Madrid and the Real Academia de la Historia. We take as the starting point for our study two letters sent by Juan Facundo Riaño to scholars from the UK, both of which provide valuable information on the international networks in op…
Graci…

Studying Gender in the Ancient Near East
The Rencontre Assyriologique Internationale held in Paris in 2009 enabled us to realize we both had a common interest: gender studies. This common interest materialized in a joint project we launched in 2012. The aims of our project were, first, to discuss some possible methodological approaches to gender within the framework of ancient Near Eastern studies; and second, to create spaces where people interested in such discussions could interact w…
The Use of Facial Characteristics as Engendering Strategies in Phoenician-Punic Studies
Facial characteristics such as discs on cheeks or exaggerated chins have been traditionally used to interpret Phoenician-Punic materials as representing either females or males. Beards and pointed chins, for instance, have been considered male attributes for terracotta masks, while disks have been interpreted as feminine makeup when present on figurines and ostrich eggshells. However, problems and even paradoxes of interpretation emerge when such…
Engendering Purity and Impurity in Assyriological Studies
Music, gender and rituals in the Ancient Mediterranean
Music, playing instruments and performing rituals are bodily activities and as such they can be studied stressing their corporeal features. Music and sounds are usually essential elements in rites, and bodies play an essential role in bringing together music and rituals. We explore these issues focusing on Punic terracotta figurines playing musical instruments recovered from the island of Ibiza (fifth to third centuries BC
Could You Take a Picture of My Boat, Please? The Use and Significance of Mediterranean Ship Representations
Representations of ships, sailors and seafarers are common in many ancient societies. They were carved, drawn or painted on a great variety of raw materials – stone, wood, metal, textiles and pottery – and can be found in settings such as caves, tombs or royal palaces. Their presence at these sites raises the possibility that these images of maritime life have symbolic or ritual connotations. This paper presents examples of representations of Pho…
