An Exploratory Non‐Destructive Provenance Analysis of Two Middle Archaic Greenstone Pendants from Little Salt Spring, Florida, USA
Test excavations in 2005 and 2006 of the Little Salt Spring mortuary pond in Southwest Florida (USA) yielded two exotic stone pendants indirectly dated to the Middle Archaic (7000–5000 14 C year B.P.). Hand‐specimen petrographic observation, combined with non‐destructive environmental scanning electron microscopy, X‐ray fluorescence spectroscopy, and whole‐rock X‐ray diffraction, identified the pendants as (1) a mica‐plagioclase‐edenite amphiboli…
Early Agriculture in the Maya Lowlands
Wetland research in northern Belize provides the earliest evidence for development of agriculture in the Maya Lowlands. Pollen data confirm the introduction of maize and manioc before 3000 B.C. Dramatic deforestation, beginning ca. 2500 B.C. and intensifying in wetland environments ca. 1500-1300 B.C., marks an expansion of agriculture, which occurred in the context of a mixed foraging economy. By 1000 B.C. a rise in groundwater levels led farmers…

A formalized approach to analysis of geoarchaeological sediment samples
This article concerns, first, the development of an approach to data analysis of sedimentological, micro‐ and macrofaunal, and artifactual data obtained from analysis of geoarchaeological sediment core samples and, second, an algorithmic ordering of resulting sediment groups to arrive at a definitive stratigraphic sequence. Correspondence analysis (CA) was the principal data analysis technique applied, and the algorithmic ordering is one develope…

A questionnaire on underwater cultural resources for …
A Survey of Shipwreck Sites Off the Southwestern Coast of Turkey
Using a combination of remote sensing techniques (side-scan sonar and underwater television), and visual inspection by SCUBA-diving, 18 wrecks ranging in age from preclassical to 19th century A.C. were located between Bodrum and Cape Gelidonya. The majority of wreck sites were known to local sponge divers. All except one site have been looted; nevertheless, eight sites are judged worthy of further investigation
