Promoting and Assessing Teacher Intercultural Learning
This systematic literature review examines 23 empirical studies (2013–2023) on promoting and assessing teachers’ intercultural competence in five English-speaking countries. The findings identify six key approaches: Pedagogical strategies, arts-based reflection, study abroad, experiential learning, technology integration, and professional development. Most studies focused on pre-service teachers, with limited attention to in-service teachers and …
Pre-service teacher education in Germany pertaining to refugee education
Recent waves of refugees into Germany have focused attention on the educational needs of refugee children in the German school system regarding language learning, students with limited or interrupted formal education (SLIFE) and trauma-informed pedagogy. As instructors in pre-service teacher education programs consider the content of their courses, they too need to be responsive to the increasing diversity and unique needs in the classrooms, sinc…
The contribution of exterior schoolscapes to neighbourhoods
Within neighbourhoods, exterior signage of schools is part of the overall linguistic landscape. As community members pass by, these signs contribute to the languages they read. Additionally, signs serve functions in keeping with their visibility. Early in the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada (March – August 2020) school buildings were closed to students, yet exterior signage remained present for passersby. In this study, how the languages and function…

Critical Literacy in Canada
Critical literacy is a pedagogy that serves to mediate social justice issues and educate for transformative social action. We present a systematic review of how critical literacy has been incorporated in Canada’s provincial/territorial curriculum documents since the late 1990s and integrated in K-12 classrooms in the last decade. Our analysis shows that critical literacy has been addressed with varying degrees of explicitness in curricula, and th…
Pre-Service Teachers’ Learning about Language Learning and Teaching
Learning about another educational context is often a stated institutional goal of pre-service study abroad. However, living abroad is no guarantee that pre-service teachers will reflect upon their language learning and teaching experiences through the lens of future teaching. Drawing from a large study of reflective practices during study abroad, from preparation to debriefing, we use nexus analysis to focus on how five pre-service teachers livi…

Sign geist
This study is an examination of signage and sign-making practices in one elementary (Kindergarten to sixth grade) public school which offers a German Bilingual Program (GBP) for the development of German–English bilingualism. Schools are public spaces in which the visible language choice on signs reveals the circulating discourses around language status. Surprisingly, little is known about the creation of these signs and the decision-making behin…
"There is no space for being German"
Some heritage language learners (HLLs) are comfortable identifying themselves as such, while others are decidedly reluctant to adopt this term (Piño & Piño, 2000). HLLs in this paper are defined as those students having a parent or grandparent who speaks German or those who have spent a significant part of their childhood in a German-speaking country (as suggested in Beaudrie & Ducar, 2005, p. 13). This paper highlights case studies of six HLLs o…
