Reading against Reform
This article pioneers a new methodological approach to the study of electoral politics by combining an analysis of the politics of reading, library association and the reading habits of electors in an English urban constituency in the early 19th century. By integrating an examination of reading practices and intellectual context into our analysis of electoral contests, political history scholars can go further in their examination of the unreform…
Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, Public Land, and the Spaces of Whiteness
In this essay, I examine the 2016 takeover of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. The principal instigators of this occupation, the Bundy family of Nevada, pointed to federally owned public lands as the primary reason for their takeover, citing the allegedly unconstitutional government ownership of these lands. I contend that the Bundys’ arguments about public lands exemplify rhetorical strategies that further one of the primary ends of settler col…

The Magnitude of Me”
During the 1970s, Reggie Jackson, arguably the most polarizing black baseball player of his time, became an emblem of the decade. A five-time World Series champion with the Oakland Athletics and the New York Yankees, he publicly challenged white owners, managers, teammates, and reporters. For Jackson, challenging white authority meant reclaiming his manhood. While white critics claimed that he was too flamboyant and too outspoken, black fans and …
A town called Riddle
In the weeks after the release of Todd Haynes's film inspired by ‘the music and many lives’ of Bob Dylan, I'm Not There (2007), a consensus emerged that of the seven different ‘Dylans’ portrayed on screen, it was Richard Gere's ‘Billy the Kid’ that was the least successful. Critics had qualms about it, on the Internet Movie Database fans consistently gave Gere low marks, and the press leaked accounts that distributor Harvey Weinstein had wanted t…
Japanese war dead
At the time a Western view that the Japanese were indifferent to death seems to have prevailed and apart from the necessary hygienic clean up after battle little seems to have been done by the Allies about Japanese war dead. Some twenty-five years after the end of World War Two, however, the Japanese were active in seeking and commemorating their war dead by arranging cremation and erecting memorials. The article records what took place on the is…
