This paper investigates coastal and trade-related names in the Abui community of Takalelang in the Alor-Pantar Archipelago of Eastern Indonesia. • Entrusting Children to Grandmothers

    Open Access•Lenny L Ekawati, I Nyoman Indra Kresna Wijaya et al.•ARTICLE•Jurnal Humaniora•2024

Open Access•Elisabeth Schröder-Butterfill, Nathan Porath et al.•ARTICLE•Progress in Development Studies•2023

Indonesia, like many rapidly ageing lower-middle-income countries (LMICs), tends to portray older citizens as ‘vulnerable’ and ‘dependent’; yet the country has few public policies to support them. To this discourse, an alternative stereotype is emerging, influenced by notions of ‘successful ageing’, which promotes models of older people as healthy and contributing to families and the nation state. In this article, we argue that both stereotypes i…

František Kratochvíl, David Moeljadi et al.•ARTICLE•Language Typology and Universals•2021

This paper describes the aspectual classes in Abui, a Papuan language of the Timor-Alor-Pantar family. Abui innovated a system of aspectual stem pairing, realized by consonant mutation, vowel grading, and rime mutation. Although stem pairing is widespread (about 61% of the verbs alternate), about 38% of our 1,330 verb sample are unpaired and immutable. Abui verbal stems combine with aspectual affixes, adverbs and auxiliary verbs, whose distributi…
