  • From Stigma to Spectacle

Open Access•Jae-Woo Park, Jae‐woo Park et al.•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2026

Social dance in Korea evolved from a stigmatized and heavily regulated activity into the institutionalized form of DanceSport. This transformation was not a straightforward process of diffusion or legal recognition but a contested historical trajectory through which cultural legitimacy was unevenly produced. Evidence from government records, media archives, and organizational documents shows how social dance was initially embraced by foreign and …

Open Access•Seung-hyo Hong, Nahyun Jeong et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Background: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a prevalent functional gastrointestinal disorder. Despite revisions of diagnostic criteria, studies applying the Rome IV criteria in Korea are limited. Environmental factors such as climate and season have been suggested to influence the epidemiology of IBS; however, their associations remain unexplored. Methods: We analyzed the prevalence and incidence of IBS in Korea from 2019 to 2023 using clinical…

Yun-Seok Choi, Yun‐Seok Choi et al.•ARTICLE•Korean Society for the Sociology…•2024

  • Algorithms in the Margins

Open Access•Taylor Marion Cruz, Jae‐woo Park et al.•ARTICLE•Engaging Science Technology and…•2024

Public deliberations on artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) provoke strong interest in automation, or the perceived displacement of human labor due to general technological advances. Social science scholarship on well-compensated technology workers and a growing global underclass suggests automation remains largely a myth, with emerging technologies generating new forms of computational and emotional work. But little research has…

  • Early Koryŏ Political Institutions and the International Expansion of Tang and Song Institutions

    Jae‐woo Park, Jae Woo Park•ARTICLE•Korean studies•2017

Koryŏ needed a secure political structure to govern effectively. It borrowed Tang and Song political models, adapting them selectively to meet Koryŏ's unique needs. Although many of the names of the Koryŏ administrative organs were the same as those used in China, in operation they often differed. Koryŏ viewed itself as an independent state distinct from China. In geographic size and population it was much smaller than China and had to respond to…

  • Interrogating the Key Policy Factors Behind South Korea’s Archery Success

Jae-Woo Park, Jae‐woo Park et al.•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2016

This paper aims to interrogate the key policy factors behind South Korea’s archery success. Based on our review on the history of Korean archery, two additional key elements in terms of organization and administration were also included to form the analytical framework of this research, aside from Green and Houlihan’s four key policy elements. Our analytical framework is thus comprised of two background elements for elite sport development – the …

  • The Social Background of the Implementation of Confucian Politics in Early Koryŏ

Open Access•Jae‐woo Park, Jaewoo Park Jaewoo Park•ARTICLE•Acta Koreana•2015

Early Koryŏ was the period in which Confucianism began to be perceived as a political ideology and Confucian politics were introduced. Many scholars have argued that this was made possible by the Confucian scholars who promoted it. Meanwhile, the powerful local families (hojok) are considered to have played a limited role in the spread of Confucianism. The introduction of Confucian politics during early Koryŏ, however, was not solely the result o…

  • Exploring the Truth

Open Access•Jae-Woo Park, Jae‐woo Park et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Sport and Social Issues•2012•Cited by: 12•References: 37

This article examines the structural problems that have accompanied South Korea's increasing emphasis on success in elite international sport. After discussing how this was brought about by the political context of the 1960s and 1970s, we focus on three particular social issues: the educational problems experienced by student-athletes, the problems these cause in later life, and the physical and sexual abuse that is committed by coaches. The stud…
