  • Roundtable on economics education in community colleges

Mark Maier, Tim Thornton•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Community colleges (often called two-year colleges) are an important part of the USA tertiary education system. Despite the sector's significance, relatively little research on economics instruction in the community colleges has occurred. This constrains the sector's capacity to understand its own needs, unique contributions, considerable strengths, and strong potential. It also adds to the risk - and often, the reality - of the sector being misu…

  • A survey of economics education at US community colleges

Mark Maier, Tim Thornton•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

In order to increase the minimal knowledge about economics instruction at US community colleges we conducted a survey of instructors in May 2019. Although only 50 instructors responded to the invitation to participate, the survey offers preliminary insights about the economics curriculum and instructor characteristics. There appears to be widespread adoption of the OpenStax textbook Principles of Economics and minimal adoption of pluralist textbo…

This article provides an overview of Just-in-Time Teaching (JiTT) pedagogy and the development, implementation, and assessment of JiTT pedagogy in teaching introductory, college-level economics courses. Broadly speaking, JiTT techniques blend structured, out-of-class, web-based exercises with related classroom activities that promote active student learning. The two components work together to promote a feedback loop that encourages outside-of-cl…

  • Commonalities, Conflicts and Contradictions in Organizational Masculinities

    Open Access•Mark Maier, James W Messerschmidt•ARTICLE•Canadian Review of Sociology/Revue…•1998•Cited by: 2•References: 8

The events surrounding the 1986 decision to launch the Space Shuttle Challenger are reconstructed to illustrate how multiple masculinities, particularly between and among managers and engineers, contributed to that organizational crisis. An analysis of gendered power relations--especially among men--reveals how the construction of particular forms of "masculinities," and the ways in which they are reproduced, rationalized or resisted, vary as a r…
