Bourdieu, Hysteresis, and Shame
This article offers a consideration of the gendered emotion of 'shame' within the context of the lived experiences of spinal cord injured men, using 'found life histories' as a source material. Drawing upon the Bourdieusian concept of 'hysteresis,' I theorize the emergence of a gendered disjuncture between incorporated expectations, values and assumptions, and the substantive enactments of masculinity socially available in the aftermath of spinal…
Friendships between men across sexual orientation
Drawing upon qualitative interview data examining friendships between men across sexual orientation, this article contributes to our understanding of the management of sexual difference within interpersonal relationships. In seeming contradistinction to substantial bodies of research that emphasise the significance of maintaining boundaries between homosocial and homosexual desire within male friendship relations, research participants commonly s…
Storying Bourdieu
While the conceptual system developed by Pierre Bourdieu has been sporadically employed within the context of life history research, the complexity of this task has often not been appreciated. This article offers a provisional attempt to explore how Bourdieusian sociology might approach life history material, focusing specifically on conceptual interpretation rather than data collection or the practicalities of data analysis. This article is self…
Disabled Masculinities
This article provides an overview of the existing sociological literature relating to disabled masculinities, a field of enquiry that has undergone substantial development over the past two decades. I contend that previous studies have insightfully uncovered the social forces that have established a “dilemma of disabled masculinity” within contemporary Western societies, as well as the complex, contextualised and multiple ways in which disabled m…
De-individualising autobiography
This article pursues a reconsideration of the role of autobiographical life writing within the context of disability studies. I respond to concerns that this genre tends toward a problematic and politically limiting individualism that undermines the consideration of disability as a social phenomenon, reproduces the depiction of disabled people as isolated outcasts, and replicates the meritocratic myths of personal achievement that dominate contem…
Friendships between Men across Sexual Orientation
Drawing upon qualitative interview data examining friendships between men across sexual orientation, this article contributes to the emergent literature surrounding the performance and articulation of “inclusive masculinities” (Anderson, 2009). Research participants demonstrated a substantial departure from many of the anxieties or conflicts historically associated with relationships between gay and straight men, such as attitudes toward “coming …
A rapid public health response to a cryptic outbreak of cholera in Hawaii
In November 1991, toxigenic Vibrio cholerae O1 infection was confirmed in two unrelated persons in Hawaii. Cholera had not been acquired in Hawaii since 1895. To determine the source and extent of V cholerae O1 infections in Hawaii, both patients were interviewed, suspect food sources were investigated, and surveillance of physicians, laboratories, hospitals, and sewage treatment plants was instituted. One patient's husband had serologic titers c…
