Berossus and the Creation Story
This article investigates the fragments of the Babyloniaca of Berossus on creation. The following aspects are considered: the narrative structure of the book and how the account of creation is introduced, with broader implications for the cultural claims of Berossus and his peers; the relation between Berossus and previous Mesopotamian traditions, mainly the Babylonian Epic of Creation (Enuma elish), as well as possible evidence of Greek influenc…
Judah in the Shadow of Babylon
This article surveys the penetration of the Neo-Babylonian empire in the southern Levant and the gradual disestablishment of the kingdom of Judah by Nebuchadnezzar II. Particular attention is paid to the strategic interests of Babylon in the region, the way conquered territories were viewed from the imperial perspective, and the impact of these factors on the destruction of Judah, its capital Jerusalem, and the exile of a large portion of its inh…
Temple Towns and Nation Building
This article surveys the Babylonian evidence from inter-city migration of priests and their families. The phenomenon is already attested during the Old Babylonian period and there are some indications that it continued under Kassite rule. However, most of the evidence comes from temple archives of the first millennium and is heavily concentrated during the long sixth century (ca. 626–484 BC ). Although many studies have identified specific cases …
Aspects of Aramaic and Babylonian Linguistic Interaction in First Millennium BC Iraq
This article investigates four areas where the influence of Aramaic on the Neo- and Late Babylonian dialects of Akkadian can be detected (8 th -3 rd centuries BC): the pronominal system, the verbal prefixes, the precative (i.e., jussive) conjugation, and cognate loanwords. In each case Babylonian appears to have replaced native forms with Aramaic equivalents that bore a close morphological, but not necessarily functional similarity to them. Arama…

The Pantheon of Uruk during the Neo-Babylonian Period
This book is about the pantheon of the Babylonian city of Uruk, between the 9th and 5th centuries BC. It is a careful analysis of the archive of the Eanna temple in Uruk, the sanctuary of the goddess Ishtar, containing well over 8,000 cuneiform tablets in the Akkadian language. The tablets date in their majority to the Neo-Babylonian and early Achaemenid period. Paul-Alain Beaulieu sheds light on the hierarchy of the local pantheon, providing a w…

W. F. Albright & Assyriology
Albright's 1916 doctoral dissertation at Johns Hopkins was entitled "The Assyrian Deluge Epic." In the beginning of his career he published some 35 articles on Mesopotamian topics. Though little of Albright's assyriological scholarship has withstood the test of time, Beaulieu describes his rediscovery of Albright as "mesmerizing ... overwhelmed with the same feeling of intellectual excitement, almost of elation, that one experiences at the contac…
