Open Access•Jeanne Maucourt, Laura Barataud et al.•ARTICLE•ArchéoSciences•2026

The villa du Gleyzia d’Augreilh, located in Saint-Sever (Landes, France), is associated with a large aristocratic Gallo-Roman villa from the late Roman Empire, which yielded over a ton of marble in a highly fragmented state (more than 2500 fragments). Around 12% of these fragments correspond to white or gray-white, primarily used in the architectural decoration of the villa’s various parts. Fifteen of these fragments were subjected to archaeometr…

  • An archaeometric study of the Monument to Augustus of Saint‐Bertrand‐de‐Comminges: Marble Provenance and in Situ Pigment Analysis

Open Access•Isabelle Pianet, Adriana Iuliano et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2025•References: 24

An in‐depth archaeometric study was undertaken on the Monument to Augustus (Saint‐Bertrand‐de‐Comminges, Occitanie, France), focusing on both the provenance of the marble and the analysis of the pigments in order to answer questions about the original layout of the Monument and the quarry(ies) that supplied the marble used to create it. A multi‐method protocol including petrography, cathodoluminescence, isotope and elemental analyses, as well as …

Open Access•Silvia González Soutelo, Anna Gutiérrez García-Moreno et al.•ARTICLE•Estudos do Quaternário /…•2020

  • Sourcing and nuclear magnetic resonance: New applications for old materials

    Open Access•Isabelle Pianet, Anna Gutiérrez Garcia-M et al.•ARTICLE•STAR Science & Technology of…•2019

Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, which enables the characterization of structures of a variety of materials whatever their crystallinity/amorphous state, is used in the present work to determine the provenance of two raw materials, namely marbles and cherts. Regarding marbles, the 13C NMR signal of the carbonate function contains information about both the Fe content in its area and the presence of calcium substitutions in the calcite crys…

  • NMR as a new tool for cultural heritage application: The provenance of ancient white marbles

    Open Access•A Gutiérrez Garcia‐M, M C Savin et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 15

Identifying the origin of marble used in antiquity brings back to light details of the economic, social and political organization of classical societies, and characterizing in depth the chemistry of marble is key to discovering its provenance. Beyond X‐ray diffraction, which could reveal the presence of discriminant secondary crystalline phases and the quantification of accessory minerals combined with a multivariate analysis approach, solid‐sta…

  • The marble of O Incio (Galicia, Spain): Quarries and first archaeometric characterisation of a material used since roman times

Open Access•Anna Gutiérrez García-Moreno, Hernando Royo Plumed et al.•ARTICLE•ArchéoSciences•2016•Cited by: 1

In spite of the great leap forward experienced in our understanding of the use of marble and other ornamental stones in Roman Spain, provenance studies are still quite uncommon in some territories of the Iberian Peninsula. This was the case of the northwesternmost part (modern Galicia), where no significant work had been done until now. Within the framework of an interdisciplinary study, a significant number of objects studied did not match with …
