    Open Access•Miguel Ángel Cau-Ontiveros, Catalina Mas Florit et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 1

An extensive magnetic survey has been carried out on a large part of the Roman and late antique city of Pollentia (Alcúdia, Mallorca, Spain), combined with ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electric resistivity imaging (ER Imaging) to obtain data for a better understanding of the ancient city. For magnetic measurements, the 7‐probe fluxgate gradiometer array was used. The GPR data were collected by means of a system equipped with two dual‐freque…

  • El mosaico pavimental de la basílica de Illa del Rei (Menorca, Baleares)

Gisela Ripoll, Catalina Mas Florit et al.•ARTICLE•Hortus Artium Medievalium•2022

The ecclesiastical complex of Illa del Rei is located on a coastal islet in the port of Mahón (Menorca, Balearic Islands). It was discovered by chance when a mosaic appeared which was made available in 1888 by a drawing by H. Llorente. New archaeological excavations undertaken in 2008 and 2013, have made it possible to re-examine the previous studies of the church’s pavement mosaic. This paper revises the mosaic taking into account the unpublishe…

  • Geophysical survey at the early Christian complex of Son Peretó (Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain)

    Open Access•Catalina Mas Florit, Miguel Ángel Cau-Ontiveros et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2021•References: 3

Rural basilicas are the most important evidence of Christianization of the countryside on the island of Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain). Recent investigations of rural landscape transformations suggest that some churches were built along communication routes and linked to preexisting settlements. To obtain new data that could support this hypothesis, a geophysical survey has been carried out at the early Christian complex of Son Peretó, one of…

  • Radiocarbon Dating of a Late Antique Necropolis From Felanitx (Mallorca, Balearic Islands)

    Open Access•Catalina Mas Florit, M Á Cau Ontiveros et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2021•References: 13

The excavation of a building in the village of Felanitx in the eastern part of the island of Mallorca (Balearic Islands) has revealed the existence of a small necropolis. The inhumations did not provide grave goods except for a bronze belt buckle for which the typological study suggests a Late Antique chronology. The stratigraphical sequence however seems to suggest a possible evolution of the space across time since some graves are cut by others…

  • Buildings of faith

Open Access•Catalina Mas Florit, Miguel Ángel Cau-Ontiveros et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Roman Archaeology•2020

The Balearic Islands lie not far off the E coast of the Iberian Peninsula in a strategic position for navigation and trade routes (fig. 1 below). Classical writers considered them two groups of islands: Mallorca and Menorca (with adjacent islands and islets), forming the Baliarides , and Ibiza and Formentera (with other islets), considered the Pityussae . 1 In 123 B.C., the Balearides were conquered by the Romans and included first in Hispania Ci…
