  • Associations of bee sting injuries with environmental and social factors: An exploratory study

    Open Access•Yoonhee Kim, Kyung‐duk Min•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Introduction: Bee stings are a significant public health concern, yet their spatial and temporal patterns have been rarely examined. Because such analyses are important for developing control strategies, this study investigated the associations between bee sting injuries and various environmental and social factors in South Korea. Methods: An ecological study was conducted at the administrative district level, encompassing 250 districts across So…

  • Projections of dengue epidemics attributable to climate change in Peru

Open Access•Taehee Chang, Saebom Choi et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2026

BACKGROUND: Climate change is expected to influence the risk of mosquito-borne diseases by altering mosquito and pathogen ecology. However, the potential impact of climate change on dengue epidemics has rarely been investigated in Peru. In this study, we projected future dengue epidemics in Peru under various climate change scenarios. METHODS: We analysed 526 033 reported dengue cases from 15 Peruvian states (2016-2023). Using quasi-Poisson time-…

  • Potential applicability of the importation risk index for predicting the risk of rarely imported infectious diseases

    Open Access•Kyung-Duk Min, Kyung‐duk Min et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Our study found that the IR index cannot be generally applicable for predicting rare importation events. However, it showed the potential utility of the IR index by suggesting acceptable performance in rabies models. Further studies are recommended to explore the generalizability of the IR index's applicability and to propose disease-specific prediction models

  • Snakebites in Rural Areas of Brazil by Race: Indigenous the Most Exposed Group

Open Access•Michael C Schneider, Myriam Vuckovic et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Animal stings are environmental hazards that threaten millions annually and cause a significant socioeconomic impact. Snakebite envenoming affects 2.7 million people globally every year, mostly the poorest and rural communities, with approximately 27,000 annual cases in Brazil. This study's objective is to identify the most exposed racial group for snakebites in rural areas of Brazil and analyze possible differences in the outcome of an accident.…

  • Association Between Owners' Attitudes Toward Companion Dogs and Their Opinions on Unprescribed Owner-Administered Injection of Their Dogs

    Kyung-Duk Min, Kyung‐duk Min et al.•ARTICLE•Anthrozoös•2021•References: 15

The popularity of companion animals in South Korea has increased rapidly in recent years. However, the injection of companion animals with unprescribed vaccines or antibiotic treatments by their owners without veterinary consultation has emerged as a serious animal welfare concern. To develop strategies for addressing this issue, first it is necessary to understand the determinants of such behavior. We considered that direct questioning of dog ow…

  • Deforestation Increases the Risk of Scrub Typhus in Korea

    Open Access•Kyung-Duk Min, Kyung‐duk Min et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Background : Scrub typhus is an important public health issue in Korea. Risk factors for scrub typhus include both individual-level factors and environmental drivers, and some are related to the increased density of vector mites and rodents, the natural hosts of the mites. In this regard, deforestation is a potential risk factor, because the deforestation-induced secondary growth of scrub vegetation may increase the densities of mites and rodents…

  • Owners’ Attitudes toward Their Companion Dogs Are Associated with the Owners’ Depression Symptoms—An Exploratory Study in South Korea

    Open Access•Kyung‐duk Min, Woo-Hyun Kim et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Background: Various health benefits from the ownership of companion dogs have been studied from a One Health perspective. However, the preventive effects on depression are unclear, with inconsistent results across studies. We hypothesized that heterogeneity among owners would be related to the mixed results. Specifically, the difference in the strength of the bond between the owners and their companion dogs would modify the effect of dog ownershi…

  • Air Pollution Monitoring Design for Epidemiological Application in a Densely Populated City

    Open Access•Kyung-Duk Min, Kyung‐duk Min et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017

Introduction : Many studies have reported the association between air pollution and human health based on regulatory air pollution monitoring data. However, because regulatory monitoring networks were not designed for epidemiological studies, the collected data may not provide sufficient spatial contrasts for assessing such associations. Our goal was to develop a monitoring design supplementary to the regulatory monitoring network in Seoul, Korea…
