  • Illegal captive lemurs in Madagascar

    Open Access•Kim E Reuter, Melissa S Schaefer et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2017

Although it is illegal to capture, sell, and trade lemurs, the live capture of lemurs in Madagascar is ongoing and may have impacted over 28,000 lemurs between 2010 and 2013. Only one study has examined this trade and did so using in-person interviews in northern Madagascar. The current study sought to expand this existing dataset and examine the comparability of online surveys to more traditional on-location data collection methods. In this stud…

  • Motivations for the Ownership of Captive Lemurs in Madagascar

    Kim E Reuter, Melissa S Schaefer et al.•ARTICLE•Anthrozoös•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 21

The live capture of primates is occurring throughout the tropics and can be a threat to their conservation. Primates are owned as pets for a variety of reasons. Studies of the motivations for primate ownership have been conducted in several countries where they are endemic, but no study has examined this issue in Madagascar. Madagascar is home to the highest number of threatened primate taxa in any one country, and an estimated 28,000 lemurs were…

  • Limb growth in captive Galago senegalensis

    Open Access•Melissa S Schaefer, M Schaefer et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2007

Since primate infants are not simply miniature adults, adult shape results from differential growth patterns of individual body segments. Initially an infant relies on its mother for transportation, and later begins independent locomotion. Skeletal growth patterns must meet the functional demands of independent locomotion. In this study we sought to determine whether Galago senegalensis braccatus follow the general primate pattern of decreasing i…

  • Brief communication

    Open Access•Melissa S Schaefer, M Schaefer•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1999

The anterior placement of the foramen magnum is often used to indicate bipedalism and therefore to distinguish hominid from nonhominid fossils. Often, only fragmentary cranial remains are found, and the placement of the foramen magnum must be determined by its relationship to another landmark. The purpose of this study was to test if hominid crania could be distinguished from nonhominid crania based on the relationship between the foramen magnum …

  • Standards for local public health services

M Schaefer, Alexandre Abrantes•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1985•Cited by: 3

Of the 47 states that participated in a 1983 survey of State Health Departments, 30 were found to have public health standards in place or started. Most states' standards emphasize the range of services to be provided, but substantial variations were found in how standards are formulated, adopted, and used by state and local agencies

  • Moving the 'standards movement

    M Schaefer•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1985•Cited by: 2•References: 1

Substantial variations found in state implementation of public health service standards were partially explained by information collected from State Health Departments. A number of structural factors, particularly the distribution of service and supervisory responsibilities between state and local agencies, produce role and tactical differences in the process of standards implementation. Patterns and philosophies of intergovernmental funding were…
