Updating Health Canada’s Heat-Health Messages for the Environment and Climate Change Canada Heat Warning System: A Collaboration with Canadian Experts
It is critical to inform the public of the threat heat poses to health and provide actionable guidance on mitigating this risk before, during, and after heat events. To help educate the public during heat events, Health Canada works closely with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) to distribute heat-health messaging through a weather warning system. However, the warning system's current list of messages dates back over a decade. Continua…
Housing and Community Economic Development: The Case of Membertou
The purpose of this article is to describe housing and community economic development in Membertou, a First Nation community located in Mi’kma’ki. First, I review how the federal government has not adequately intervened in housing for First Nations communities across Canada. I then present a case of my home community of Membertou and the initiatives that are in place to help solve the local housing crisis and generate community wealth at the same…
Future temperature-related excess mortality under climate change and population aging scenarios in Canada
Canada may expect net increases in temperature-related mortality under a higher emissions climate change scenario, compared to one assuming sustainable development. Urgent action is needed to mitigate future climate change impacts
Impact of Ontario’s Harmonized Heat Warning and Information System on emergency department visits for heat-related illness in Ontario, Canada: A population-based time series analysis
Developing a harmonized heat warning and information system for Ontario: A case study in collaboration
The lessons learned could help spur action in other provinces and jurisdictions internationally in the development of similar health evidence-based warning systems, including in particular those for protecting public health during extreme heat events
Establishing Heat Alert Thresholds for the Varied Climatic Regions of British Columbia, Canada
Following an extreme heat event in 2009, a Heat Alert and Response System (HARS) was implemented for the greater Vancouver area of British Columbia (BC), Canada. This system has provided a framework for guiding public health interventions and assessing population response and adaptation to extreme heat in greater Vancouver, but no other parts of BC were covered by HARS. The objective of this study was to identify evidence-based heat alert thresho…
The Type B Behavior Pattern as a Moderating Variable of the Relationship between Stressor Chronicity and Health Behavior
To test the hypotheses that Type B individuals would engage in more preventive and less risk-related behaviors under high stress than Type As, 155 students were administered questionnaires pertaining to the TABP, daily hassles, and health behavior. As predicted, in six out of seven regression analyses, Type Bs engaged in more preventive, and fewer risk-related behaviors under high stress, than those who self-reported as Type A. Self-regulation me…
Approaches to Goldie: A Field Study of Human Approach Responses to Canine Juvenescence
Approaches by human passers-by to a Golden Retriever puppy with a human companion were tallied as the puppy aged from ten weeks to 33 weeks. Over this period, approaches were most numerous when the puppy was youngest, with females approaching more than males during the first half of sampling, but equaling male approaches during the second half. Both the number of human approaches and the proportions of males and females were independent of the se…
