  • Division of labor and sex (in)equality among the marine hunter-fisher-gatherers of north-central Chile (5500–2000 cal BP)

Marta Alfonso‐durruty, Nicole Misarti et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Island and Coastal…•2026

Understanding the local historical trajectories of hunter-gatherers requires a close examination of sexual divisions, as they may undermine egalitarian politics and trigger processes of social differentiation. This study examines the diet (stable isotopes and dental pathologies) and burials of males and females interred at Punta Teatinos, a coastal site located in north-central Chile (5500–500 cal BP), which included a cemetery that was used betw…

  • Cazadores-recolectores-pescadores del Holoceno medio-tardío en el norte semiárido de Chile

    Open Access•A Troncoso, Daniel Pascual et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 43

  • Haunting Bodies

    Marta Alfonso-Durruty, Marta Alfonso‐durruty et al.•ARTICLE•Bioarchaeology International•2021

The goal of this study is to describe and assess evidence of trauma in the osteological remains of three individuals that were fortuitously found in southernmost Fuego-Patagonia (52°–56°S). The cases correspond to individuals AH4354 (Laguna Verde), 29751 (Posesión Olympia-2), and 96074 (Caleta Lennox) located in continental Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, and the Fuegian Archipelago, respectively. Age and sex estimations were conducted based on esta…

  • Early human dispersals within the Americas

Open Access•J Víctor Moreno-Mayar, Lasse Vinner et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2018

Complex processes in the settling of the Americas The expansion into the Americas by the ancestors of present day Native Americans has been difficult to tease apart from analyses of present day populations. To understand how humans diverged and spread across North and South America, Moreno-Mayar et al. sequenced 15 ancient human genomes from Alaska to Patagonia. Analysis of the oldest genomes suggests that there was an early split within Beringia…

  • Maize ( Zea mays ) consumption in the southern andes (30°–31° S. Lat)

    Open Access•Marta Alfonso‐durruty, A Troncoso et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2017

The popularization of maize in the SARNC was not associated with the appearance of pottery and/or sedentism, and its role as a dietary staple was a late phenomenon (c.a. 1,000CE). The results obtained in this study show that the adoption and consumption of maize varied dramatically in the Southern Andes.

  • Assessment of an east-west phenotypic variation in body height, body form and body mass among prehistoric hunter-gatherers of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, chile

    Open Access•Marta Alfonso-Durruty, Marta Alfonso‐durruty et al.•ARTICLE•Chungara•2017

Chungara, Revista de Antropologa Chilena Fuego-Patagonia's marine and terrestrial groups were historically described as phenotypically distinct but, studies of these phenotypic differences have yet to be conducted. This study evaluates phenotypic variation in Fuego-Patagonia. Phenotypic disparities result from extrinsic and intrinsic factors and therefore can reveal differences in both long and short term adaptations as well as genetic difference…

  • Growth patterns among indigenous Qom children of the Argentine Gran Chaco

    Open Access•Marta P Alfonso‐durruty, Marta Alfonso‐durruty et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2016

OBJECTIVES: This study describes and compares the growth strategies of rural (Western) and peri-urban (Eastern) Qom indigenous children from Argentina. METHODS: Height and weight were cross-sectionally assessed in Western (n = 263) and Eastern Qom (n = 512) individuals aged 0-18.9 years. Height-for-age (HAZ), weight-for-age (WAZ), and BMI-for-age (BMIZ) z-scores were calculated with an LMS software. Results were organized into four age categories…

  • Dental Pathologies and Diet in the Middle Woodland Burials from Helena Crossing, Arkansas

    Open Access•Marta Alfonso‐durruty, Marta P Alfonso-Durruty et al.•ARTICLE•North American Archaeologist•2014•References: 34

The goal of this study is to evaluate dental lesions and infer the diet of those interred at Helena Crossing, Arkansas. Helena Crossing is located in Southeastern North America and dates to the Middle Woodland Period (150 B.C. ± 75–A.D. 335 ± 75). Until now, no systematic dental analysis has been done in this group. For the purpose of this study, all remains were macroscopically examined for age, sex, and dental pathologies. Adult teeth presented…

  • Experimental assessment of nutrition and bone growth's velocity effects on Harris lines formation

    Open Access•Marta P Alfonso‐durruty, Marta Alfonso‐durruty•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2011•Cited by: 8•References: 82

Harris lines (HL) are radio‐opaque transverse lines traditionally associated with stressors that halt or decelerate growth in humans. Harris lines' status as a stress marker is, however, questionable because their association to illness and deficient growth is low and they commonly form in the absence of stress during periods of accelerated growth. To assess Harris line's reliability as a stress marker, this study examined their association with …

  • Revisiting the Dead at Helena Crossing, Arkansas

    Bretton T Giles, Bretton Giles et al.•ARTICLE•Southeastern Archaeology•2010•Cited by: 4•References: 14

This paper presents the results of a bioarchaeological reanalysis of the skeletal remains interred in the Middle Woodland burial mounds at the Helena Crossing site (3PH11). Based on current bioarchaeological methods, our reanalysis offers summaries of the sex and age estimates, pathologies, and trauma of the burials from Helena Crossing that are useful for their subsequent interpretation. We also document previously unrecognized evidence of postm…
