Environments of Florida in The Late Wisconsin and Holocene
The major features of the Late Wisconsin and Holocene vegetation and climatic history of Florida are known from palynological studies of lake sediments at several sites on the peninsula. For early inhabitants, the most important environmental change took place between 7000 and 5000 B. P., gradually at some sites, apparently more abruptly at others, but terminating by 5000 B. P. The contrast between the prairie/dry oak-forest communities before 50…
Mid to late Holocene climate evolution of the Lake Telmen Basin, North Central Mongolia, based on palynological data
Palynological and sedimentological data from Lake Telmen, in north-central Mongolia, permit qualitative reconstruction of relative changes in moisture balance throughout the mid to late Holocene. The climate of the Atlantic period (7500–4500 yr ago) was relatively arid, indicating that Lake Telmen lay beyond the region of enhanced precipitation delivered by the expanded Asian monsoon. Maximum humidity is recorded between ∼4500 and 1600 cal yr B.P…
Paleoecological Evidence of an Early Postclassic Occupation in the Southwestern Maya Lowlands: Laguna Las Pozas, Guatemala
Magnetic, palynological, and paleoecological data indicate that in the Río de la Pasión drainage, one of the most thoroughly investigated areas of the southern Maya lowlands, a refugee population remained in the Laguna Las Pozas basin long after the Classic Maya collapse and the Terminal Classic period, previously identified by archaeologists as eras of near-total regional abandonment. During the Early Postclassic period, ca. A. D. 900 to 1200, a…
A Late-Glacial/Holocene Pollen Record from the Eastern Andes of Northern Peru
A pollen and sediment record of a core 4.2-m-long from Laguna Baja (7°42′ S, 77°32′ W, 3575 m) in the Cordillera Oriental of northern Peru suggests several episodes of major vegetational and climatic change over the past 13,000 yr. The oldest pollen assemblage consists of a mixture of paramo elements (tropical alpine vegetation), including high percentages of Poaceae (40%) that decline upward, moist montane forest (Compositae and Polylepis ), and…
