Chinese language varieties: Pre- and in-service teachers’ voices
We investigate the perceptions of international and American Chinese bilingual pre- and in-service graduate students and language teachers regarding Chinese varieties. The 25 participants were currently enrolled college students or recent graduates majoring in language education or other associated programmes at an urban university in the north-eastern United States. The pragmatics of refusals in English and Japanese: Alternative Approaches to Negotiation
We examine refusals negotiated and understood by adult female native speakers of American English and Japanese. In open role-plays produced by 8 pairs of Japanese and 8 pairs of American English speakers, a request was refused. To uncover possible barriers to effective communication and learning, this study explored how college‐level Japanese English language learners in English‐as‐a‐second‐language (ESL) and English‐as‐a‐foreign‐language (EFL) contexts viewed their English teachers and classroom activities.
