    H Ru, Sung Hee Ru•ARTICLE•Asia Review•2023

  • Toward a Historical Sociology of Covid-19

    Open Access•H Ru•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Sociology•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 22

Encountering the unprecedented social crisis of COVID-19, an increasing number of sociologists are calling for historical sociology to engage empirically with the dynamics of the COVID-19 crisis. I present the "path dependence method" and the "temporal connections" to interpret social life during the COVID-19 pandemic. By using the path dependence method, I show how the personal, social, and national problems created by the COVID-19 crisis initia…

  • Conceptualizing China's tea history in the 19th century

    Open Access•H Ru•ARTICLE•Journal of Agrarian Change•2021

Recent accounts of China's tea history in the 19th century have been presented without adequate attention to global capitalism's dynamics, despite the fact that researchers have explicitly or implicitly accepted the idea that China experienced a massive and unprecedented change in tea cultivation during this period, prompted by the penetration of capitalist logics. By analysing China's capitalist incorporation process, I show why and how tea‐grow…

  • Two Theoretical Resources for the Nineteenth Century China’s Incorporation Process

H Ru, Sung Hee Ru•ARTICLE•Korean Journal of Sociology•2020

In light of the encroachment of Western powers and a sharp decline of the self-sustained Qing Empire, prominent accounts of China’s historical capitalism have tended to mark 19th-century China as a decline. In contrast to the dominant view that sees 19th-century China as a dark age, world-systems scholars, implicitly or explicitly, conceive a basic premise that 19th-century China’s incorporation process can be understood as not China’s decline bu…

  • Forging a Pure Military Identity

Open Access•H Ru, Sung Hee Ru•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Sociology•2020•References: 36

Prominent studies of the Qing dynasty's military evolution in the field of comparative military history, which is heavily dependent on the binary conception of "West-China," have failed to present the early military heritage of the dynasty. Unlike previous studies, this paper aims to find a new voice for the early Qing military inheritance, as a reflection of past West-China comparative studies that have continued to discriminate between Western …

  • Mapping Transformation of Nineteenth-Century Chinese Cities within China’s Incorporation Process

    H Ru•ARTICLE•Comparative Sociology•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 19

During the 19th century, China’s socioeconomic geography experienced unprecedented spatial changes. Through these spatial transformations, which were caused by the penetration of western capitalism, Chinese cities morphed into epicenters of international trade between Western powers and China. By examining the major transformations having taken place in 19th century Chinese cities, the author investigates unexplained or neglected transformations …
