An ancient bison from the mouth of the Rauchua River (Chukotka, Russia)
An incomplete carcass of an extinct bison, Bison ex gr. priscus , was discovered in 2012 in the mouth of the Rauchua River (69°30′N, 166°49′E), Chukotka. The carcass included the rump with two hind limbs, ribs, and large flap of hide from the abdomen and sides, several vertebrae, bones of the forelimbs and anterior autopodia, stomach with its contents, and wool. The limb bones are relatively gracile, which is unusual in bison, and a SEM study of …
Stable-Isotope Analysis as a Method of Taxonomical Identification of Archaeozoological Material
The paper discusses the possibility of using carbon isotope composition (ratio of 13 C /12 C ) and nitrogen isotope composition (ratio of 15 N /14 N ) for taxonomic diagnostics of animal bone remains from archaeological sites and other ancient deposits. The world literature pertaining to the use of stable-isotope analysis (SIA) in animal trophic ecology and methodological difficulties of work with subfossil material are reviewed. Several particul…
The Neanderthals of Okladnikov Cave Altai
The discovery of a Mousteroid industry in the northwestern Altai represents a major finding in Eurasian Paleolithic studies. Isotopic analyses of bone collagen of late Western European Neanderthals have repeatedly indicated that they were extremely carnivorous. However, no corresponding information was previously available for the Neanderthals of the Altai. With this in mind, an isotopic study was conducted to assess the diet of the Middle Paleol…
