Geochemical Characteristics of the Raw Materials and Moulding Compounds of Neolithic Net-Impressed Ceramics from Central Siberia
Introduction. This study investigates the chemical composition of Neolithic net-impressed ceramics from Central Siberia using portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) analysis. The primary objective is to characterize the raw materials and moulding compounds employed by hunter-gatherer communities in the region. Materials and Research Methods. The sample set comprises 147 ceramic specimens from 11 archaeological sites: eight located in Yakutia and thre…
Provenance of the pumice manuports from archaeological sites at the Vitim River, East Siberia, Russia
A Workflow for Uncertainty Assessment in Elemental Analysis of Archaeological Ceramics
In this study, the assessment of uncertainties introduced at different stages of the elemental analysis of archaeological ceramics has been described using the example of the Neolithic pottery sherds from Popovsky Lug (eastern Siberia). To evaluate the uncertainty introduced by sampling due to ceramic heterogeneity, three original sherds were cut into small subsamples. Powdered subsamples (250–350 mg) were analyzed using wavelength-dispersive X-r…
Argillite Artifacts and Final Pleistocene to Middle Holocene Cultural Links Across the Vitim River Basin (Baikal Region)
This paper presents the results of X-ray fl uorescence and X-ray diffraction analyses of argillite artifacts from Kovrizhka I on the lower Vitim and Ust-Karenga XVI on the upper Vitim. The specimens from layer 2 of Kovrizhka I date to ca 6 radiocarbon ka BP and belong to a non-ceramic culture with microblades. Two ritual pits at Ust-Karenga XVI, dating to 7–6 radiocarbon ka BP and associated with the late stage of the Ust-Karenga Neolithic cultur…
