Chemical Composition of Copper and Bronze Artifacts from Early Iron Age Hoards of the Rock Outcrop Shrines on Shatanov Island, Lake Irtyash, Southern Trans-Urals
The research discloses findings of the chemical composition analysis of non-ferrous metal discovered in treasures of the Shatanov Island cave sanctuaries at the Irtyash Lake, the Southern Urals. The metal chemical composition analysis engages X-ray fluorescence testing, mass-spectrometry and accelerator mass-spectrometry dating by the Novosibirsk State University – Novosibirsk Research Center Accelerator Mass-Spectrometry Common Unit (Novosibirsk…
Shatanov-6 Itkul Rock Sanctuary by the Irtyash Lake in the Southern Transurals
The article gives an overview of Shatanov-6 rock sanctuary situated on Shatanov Island in the Irtyash Lake in the Chelyabinsk region north. The revealed monument reveals collections of copper and bronze items. Most of items are identified as plastic art of ritualistic purpose. Totally the excavations exposed nine copper bars, five sprues, two pieces of iron puddle balls, ceramic vessel fragments and 63 items of copper and copper alloys. The colle…
Slag Inclusions in Iron Artifacts from Cemeteries at Kichigino I and Krasnaya Gorka, and the Metallurgy of the Early Iron Age Itkul Culture
The Geochemistry of Unalloyed Copper Metallurgical Group Indicates Copper Ore Sources in the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages of the Urals
Slag Inclusions in Iron Artifacts from Cemeteries at Kichigino I and Krasnaya Gorka, and the Metallurgy of the Early Iron Age Itkul Culture
Silicate slag inclusions in iron artifacts from the Trans-Urals and in iron slags from sites of the Itkul culture were analyzed to assess the geochemical characteristics of iron ore sources exploited during the Early Iron Age. Slag inclusions were found in 19 out of 25 samples from Kichigino I and Krasnaya Gorka. For comparison, we used 12 iron slag samples from Early Iron Age and medieval sites near Lake Irtysh and from Zotino mine. Via statisti…
The Geochemistry of Unalloyed Copper Metallurgical Group Indicates Copper Ore Sources in the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages of the Urals
Trace elements in copper artifacts from Late Bronze and Early Iron Age sites in the Urals, formerly attributed to the metallurgical group of “chemically pure” copper, were analyzed using the method of laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The metal of which artifacts included in this group are made reveals geochemical markers suggesting that “pure” copper actually falls into several subgroups. The PCA analysis of the result…
Copper technology at the Early Iron Age fortified settlements near Lakes Itkul and Irtyash, middle Trans-Urals
Investigation of ancient iron and copper production remains from Irtyash Lake (middle Trans-Urals, Russia)
