    Open Access•Irina P Panyushkina, Valerie Livina et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 33

A signal of rapid changes in 14 C production is logged in annual series of 14 C derived from tree rings, which can be associated with diverse effects of cosmic-ray fluxes, including solar burst and supernova events. These 14 C signatures may vary in time and space. The intensity and structure of the 14 C signal is multifaced, which complicates understanding of the forcing and attribution of the underlying astrophysical events. It was suggested th…

  • Chronology of the Golden Horde in Kazakhstan

    Open Access•Irina P Panyushkina, Emma R Usmanova et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2022•References: 12

We present accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS 14 C) dating results of the “Jochi Khan Mausoleum”—the proposed burial place of the oldest son of Gengghis Khan in Ulytau, Kazakhstan. The Ulytau region retains 34 burial complexes of Islamic tradition associated with the Golden Horde history (1221–1438 CE). However, there is no calendar-dated chronology of the medieval mausoleums in this region, which complicates their historical interpre…

  • Unprecedented acceleration of winter discharge of Upper Yenisei River inferred from tree rings

    Open Access•Irina P Panyushkina, David M Meko et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

The Yenisei River is the largest contributor of freshwater and energy fluxes among all rivers draining to the Arctic Ocean. Modeling long-term variability of Eurasian runoff to the Arctic Ocean is complicated by the considerable variability of river discharge in time and space, and the monitoring constraints imposed by a sparse gauged-flow network and paucity of satellite data. We quantify tree growth response to river discharge at the upper reac…

  • Impact of high flows of an Arctic river on ring widths of floodplain trees

    Open Access•David M Meko, Irina P Panyushkina et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2020

The tree-ring signal for flooding along the Ob River, a large Arctic River in western Siberia, is investigated using a combination of floodplain tree-ring sites from riparian and non-riparian settings. A conceptual model is presented contrasting tree-growth responses of riparian and non-riparian trees to unusually severe flooding. A set of five riparian ( Salix and Populus) tree-ring chronologies is developed and used in combination with existing…

    Open Access•Emma Usmanova, E R Usmanova et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2018•Cited by: 1

We present an archaeological study of medieval burials of warriors in the Karasuyr cemetery in the northwestern Betpakdala desert, near the southern Ulytau range in central Kazakhstan. The region was an eastern province of the Golden Horde, a ritual center of Jochi’s clan and later Mongol rulers until the late 16th century. The excavated part of the cemetery includes fi ve burials. Four were those of males (three Mongoloid and one Caucasoid), and…

  • A 1400-Year Bølling-Allerød Tree-Ring Record from the U.S. Great Lakes Region

    Open Access•Irina P Panyushkina, Steven W Leavitt et al.•ARTICLE•Tree-Ring Research•2017

Since the late 19th Century, geologists and naturalists working in the US Midwest have reported an abundance of tree macrofossils embedded in glacial and lacustrine deposits formed after the Last Glacial Maximum. The most widely-known of these sites is the Two Creeks type locality in Wisconsin. We report progress on development of a long tree-ring record from this subfossil wood in the US Great Lakes region, employing samples collected during a d…

  • Search for Annual 14 C Excursions in the Past

Open Access•Fusa Miyake, Kimiaki Masuda et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 26

Two radiocarbon excursions (AD 774–775 and AD 993–994) occurred due to an increase of incoming cosmic rays on a short timescale. The most plausible cause of these events is considered to be extreme solar proton events (SPE). It is possible that there are other annual 14 C excursions in the past that have yet to be confirmed. In order to detect more of these events, we measured the 14 C contents in bristlecone pine tree-ring samples during the per…

  • Trends In Elemental Concentrations of Tree Rings From the Siberian Arctic

    Irina P Panyushkina, Vladimir V Shishov et al.•ARTICLE•Tree-Ring Research•2016

The biogeochemistry and ecology of the Arctic environment have been heavily impacted by anthropogenic pollution and climate change. We used ICP-MS to measure concentrations of 26 elements in the AD 1300–2000 tree rings of larch from the Taymyr Peninsula in northern Siberia for studying the interaction between environmental change and wood chemistry. We applied a two-stage data reduction technique to identify trends in the noisy measurement data. …

  • Calendar Age of the Baigetobe Kurgan from the Iron Age Saka Cemetery in Shilikty Valley, Kazakhstan

    Open Access•Irina P Panyushkina, Igor Y Slyusarenko et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2016•References: 10

This study addresses the development of an absolute chronology for prominent burial sites of Inner Asian nomadic cultures. We investigate Saka archaeological wood from a well-known gold-filled Baigetobe kurgan (burial mound #1 of Shilikty-3 cemetery) to estimate its calendar age using tree-ring and 14 C dating. The Saka was the southernmost tribal group of Asian Scythians, who roamed Central Asia during the 1st millennium BC (Iron Age). The Shili…

  • Tree-Ring Investigation of Holocene Flood-Deposited Wood From the Oneida Lake Watershed, New York State

    Irina P Panyushkina, Steven W Leavitt et al.•ARTICLE•Tree-Ring Research•2015

Glacial deposition and fluvial/lacustrine sedimentation interact over terrains in central New York State to preserve a history of geological and hydrological events as well as hydroclimatic transitions. The lower reach of Fish Creek draining the eastern watershed of Oneida Lake, NY, is an area with prominent wood remains. This study explores a collection of 52 logs encased in organic-rich deposits exposed by bank erosion at three locations along …

  • Deglacial Hydroclimate of Midcontinental North America

    Open Access•Steven L Voelker, Michael C Stambaugh et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2015

During the last deglaciation temperatures over midcontinental North America warmed dramatically through the Bølling-Allerød, underwent a cool period associated with the Younger-Dryas and then reverted to warmer, near modern temperatures during the early Holocene. However, paleo proxy records of the hydroclimate of this period have presented divergent evidence. We reconstruct summer relative humidity (RH) across the last deglacial period using a m…

  • Environment and paleoecology of a 12 ka mid-North American Younger Dryas forest chronicled in tree rings

    Open Access•Irina P Panyushkina, Steven W Leavitt et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2008

Until now, availability of wood from the Younger Dryas abrupt cooling event (YDE) in N. America ca. 12.9 to 11.6 ka has been insufficient to develop high-resolution chronologies for refining our understanding of YDE conditions. Here we present a multi-proxy tree-ring chronology (ring widths, “events” evidenced by microanatomy and macro features, stable isotopes) from a buried black spruce forest in the Great Lakes area (Liverpool East site), span…

We measured radiocarbon ages of 22 decadal replications and 1 bulk group from 5 tree-ring specimens using acid-base-acid pretreatment and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). The study has the goal of refining the precision and resolution of a segment of the conventional Bronze Age chronology in the Eurasian steppe attributed to the multicultural community known as Andronovo. The archaeological timbers were gathered from 3 cemeteries at the Lisak…

  • Radiocarbon “Wiggles” in Great Lakes Wood at About 10,000 to 12,000 BP

    Open Access•Steven W Leavitt, Irina P Panyushkina et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2007•References: 12

High-resolution radiocarbon calibration for the last 14,000 cal yr has been developed in large part using European oaks and pines. Recent subfossil wood collections from the Great Lakes region provide an opportunity to measure 14 C activity in decadal series of rings in North America prior to the White Mountains bristlecone record. We developed decadal 14 C series from wood at the classic Two Creeks site (∼11,850 BP) in east-central Wisconsin, th…

  • A multiproxy environmental investigation of Holocene wood from a submerged conifer forest in Lake Huron, USA

Open Access•R Douglas Hunter, Irina P Panyushkina et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2006

Remains of a Holocene drowned forest in southern Lake Huron discovered in 12.5 m of water (164 m above sea level), 4.5 km east of Lexington, Michigan USA (Sanilac site), provided wood to investigate environment and lake history using several proxies. Macrofossil evidence indicates a forest comprised primarily of conifers equivalent to the modern “rich conifer swamp” community, despite generally low regional abundance of these species in pollen re…

  • Climate in the Great Lakes Region Between 14,000 and 4000 Years Ago from Isotopic Composition of Conifer Wood

    Open Access•Steven W Leavitt, Irina P Panyushkina et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2006•References: 36

The isotopic composition of ancient wood has the potential to provide information about past environments. We analyzed the δ 13 C, δ 18 O, and δ 2 H of cellulose of conifer trees from several cross-sections at each of 9 sites around the Great Lakes region ranging from ∼4000 to 14,000 cal BP. Isotopic values of Picea , Pinus , and Thuja species seem interchangeable for δ 18 O and δ 2 H comparisons, but Thuja appears distinctly different from the o…

  • Mixed Response of Decadal Variability in Larch Tree-Ring Chronologies from Upper Tree-Lines of the Russian Altai

    Irina P Panyushkina, Dmitriy V Ovtchinnikov et al.•ARTICLE•Tree-Ring Research•2005

We developed a network of tree-ring width chronologies of larch (Larix sibirica Led.) from upper tree-lines of the southeast Altai Mountains, South Siberia. Annual tree-ring variability of chronologies since A.D. 1710 was compared using factor analysis. The factor analysis clustered eight tree-ring chronologies into two groups that were used for compositing chronologies. One resulting composite chronology (A.D. 1582–1994) averaged sites from uppe…

  • Tree-Ring Records of Near-Younger Dryas Time in Central North America—Preliminary Results from the Lincoln Quarry Site, Central Illinois, Usa

    Open Access•Irina P Panyushkina, Steven W Leavitt et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2004•References: 15

The abrupt millennial-scale changes associated with the Younger Dryas (YD) event (“chronozone”) near the dawn of the Holocene are at least hemispheric, if not global, in extent. Evidence for the YD cold excursion is abundant in Europe but fairly meager in central North America. We are engaged in an investigation of high-resolution environmental changes in mid-North America over several millennia (about 10,000 to 14,000 BP) during the Late Glacial…
