    Open Access•Robin Bendrey, Joseph P Cassidy et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2011•Cited by: 6•References: 10

Occipital bone lesions on an Iron Age horse cranium from the burial mound of Arzhan 1, Tuva, Central Asia, are described and interpreted. Cavitations around the nuchal ligament attachment site on the skull are interpreted as foci of inflammation and necrosis following local infection. It is suggested that the pathology represents a case of 'poll-evil', most likely due to a bacterial infection. The significance of such an interpretation is discuss…

  • Radiocarbon Dating of Oglakhty Grave Using a Wiggle Matching Method

    Open Access•Pankova, V Pankova et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2010•Cited by: 2

The absolute age of early Tashtyk grave 4 at Oglakhty, Khakassia, like that of most Tashtyk burial grounds, has been a matter of debate. The distinctive feature of this assemblage is the excellent state of preservation of artifacts made from organic materials. Samples of two wooden logs from the burial chamber found inside early Tashtyk grave 4 were subjected to the wiggle matching method. For each sample, an early and late probable radiocarbon d…

We present a radiocarbon chronology of key Sayan-Altai monuments from the Scythian period, based on a statistical analysis of dates produced in the 1980s and now supplemented with new dates. These new 14 C dates were produced for samples from the Tuekta-1 barrows (burial mounds) and were measured both in St. Petersburg and Groningen. These tree-ring samples were fitted to the calibration curve. Chronologies were established for the Arzhan, Tuekta…
