The non-utilitarian objects from the initial Upper Paleolithic Ushbulak site in eastern Kazakhstan
The Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition shows numerous indications for a manifestation of abstract thinking and symbolic behavior. In northern Central Asia this process is illustrated by the appearance and distribution of personal ornaments (pendants, beads, patterned items), as well as by evidence for the use of natural pigments and ritual activities. However, not only articles with distinctive functional features, but also finds of unknown …
New Data on the Initial Upper Paleolithic Assemblages from the Ushbulak Site (Based on Evidence from the Southern Part of the Site)
Primary Reduction in the Stone Industry of the Initial Stages of Upper Paleolithic on the Ushbulak Site (Eastern Kazakhstan)

Kara-Bom
New archaeological investigations at the key Palaeolithic Russian site of Kara-Bom have further characterised its stratigraphy through analysis of the rich lithic complex recovered. This evidence both complements and supplements our understanding of central and northern Asian Initial Upper Palaeolithic populations
New Findings on Lithic Industries of the Middle to Upper Paleolithic Boundary in Dagestan
The article presents geomorphological and stratigraphic descriptions of Tinit-1 – a Paleolithic site in Dagestan. A technological and typological study of lithics from excavation 2 includes two refitting analyses. Results of pollen analysis of habitation layers and of radiocarbon dating are presented. Sources of raw material and possible economic specialization are discussed. Taken together these findings indicate that the site dates to the late …
