Climate and ice conditions of East Siberian Sea during Holocene
Reconstruction of ice conditions and climate of the East Siberian Sea during the Late Middle Holocene was implemented for the first time using a transfer function method based on marine sedimentation proxies. Transfer functions were developed based on a hydrometeorological time series of changes in mean annual air temperature (ΔT 10 ) and the ice-free period (IF 10 ) for the last 70–90 years and a geochemical time series of bottom sediments accum…
On Spring Rituals in the Udmurt Village Varkled-Bodya (With Regard to the Bilingual Monograph by E. Toulouze and N. V. Anisimov)
This article is devoted to a review of a recently published bilingual monograph by E. Toulouze and N. V Anisimov called “Spring rituals of the Varkled-Böd’ya Udmurt” dedicated to the description and analysis of the complex of spring rituals marking the beginning of the new year according to the Udmurt traditional calendar. The authors try to understand how and in what way the transformation processes are manifested in the modern Udmurt village co…
Holocene environments and climate in the Mongolian Altai reconstructed from the Hoton-Nur pollen and diatom records
Environmental Changes in the Mongolian Altai During the Holocene
Based on palynological and diatom analyses of the sediment core from Lake Hoton Nuur situated at 2083 m asl, environmental changes in the Mongolian Altai during the Holocene are described. The results suggest that the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene (11.5–10.7 ka) climate of that area was cold and arid, and plant associations were of a steppe type. The Middle Holocene (9.3–6.5 ka) climate was warm and humid, resulting in the expansion of fore…
Yr-long records of annual air temperature and precipitation over southern Siberia inferred from Teletskoye Lake sediments
A unique 800-yr-long record of annual temperatures and precipitation over the south of western Siberia has been reconstructed from the bottom sediments of Teletskoye Lake, Altai Mountains using an X-ray fluorescence scanner (XRF) providing 0.1-mm resolution timeseries of elemental composition and X-ray density (XRD). Br content appears to be broadly correlative with mean annual temperature variations because of changes in catchment vegetation pro…
Environmental changes in the northern Altai during the last millennium documented in Lake Teletskoye pollen record
A high-resolution pollen record from Lake Teletskoye documents the climate-related vegetation history of the northern Altai Mountain region during the last millennium. Siberian pine taiga with Scots pine, fir, spruce, and birch dominated the vegetation between ca. AD 1050 and 1100. The climate was similar to modern. In the beginning of the 12th century, birch and shrub alder increased. Lowered pollen concentrations and simultaneous peaks in herbs…
