  • Imagining trans past yet to come

    Open Access•Catarina S Martins, Cat Martins et al.•ARTICLE•Paedagogica Historica•2025

As nonbinary trans and cis gay scholars, respectively, we queer the potential of a history of education committed to recovering trans, gender-nonconforming, and queer existences erased by Western colonial violence. Drawing on the case of António Custódio das Neves (1858–1888), born in Portugal and assigned female at birth but growing up male and called the “Woman Man” or “Man Woman”, we confront colonialist erasure of such existences. Through “cr…

    Open Access•Catarina S Martins•ARTICLE•Revista Digital do LAV•2021

  • The Arts in Education as Police Technologies

    Catarina S Martins•ARTICLE•European Education•2013•References: 6

The paper aims to provide a platform for thinking about the presence of the arts in education at the present as a practice of governing. Through an analysis of the incorporation of the arts in the school curriculum we can see how this was a subject able to promote a political subjectivation of each child as citizen of the future. I focus on the arts in education as police technologies in the government of the child's soul. Police technologies giv…

  • The Other and the Same

Catarina Martins, Catarina S Martins et al.•ARTICLE•Paedagogica Historica•2011

This article deals with the heuristic potentials of the documentary film Children’s Parks in the historical and visual treatment of educational subjects and objects. We will choose specific moments in the film in order to discuss theoretical and methodological questions implied in the relationship between images and words, aiming to understand how pictorial meaning is connected to the production of specific kinds of subjectivities. Each section w…

  • Indisciplines of inquiry

Helena Cabeleira, Catarina Martins et al.•ARTICLE•Paedagogica Historica•2011

The starting point for this article is a film about Scottish education, Children’s Story. Children’s Story was one of a group of seven documentaries made for the 1938 British Empire Exhibition in Glasgow, under the supervision of John Grierson. The film was an official entry into the Exhibition and is a formal display of key ideas and elements of Scottish education – past, present and (especially) future. The film will be used to raise questions …

  • Do you hear with your ears or with your eyes?”

    Catarina S Martins•ARTICLE•Paedagogica Historica•2009•Cited by: 1

This paper focuses on the education of the deaf pupils at Casa Pia de Lisboa, a Portuguese boarding‐school, covering the period from 1820 to 1950. The intention is to show that a historical sedimentation of a scientific discourse about deafness is an effect of a new rationality of government begun by modernity and perfectly fitting a bio‐political strategy. The development of medical and psychological sciences and their inscription in the educati…
