The dual illusion of grants-in-aid on central and local expenditures: A reply
An Early Use of Bid Rent Functions
This paper examines Launhardt's contributions to the bid rent function and the patterns of land use. It shows that principles of bid rent analysis pioneered by Launhardt in 1885 have found application by later writers in urban and regional economics and economic geography apparently unfamiliar with his name and work. This indicates that Launhardt's name deserves to be mentioned alongside those of Alonso, Dunn and Losch, as writers who have contri…

FOB Mill Pricing and Plant Location when Demand is Linear but Non-uniform
This paper examines the impact of non-uniform linear demand on plant location under FOB mill pricing. It shows that the principle of median location and the Rydell principle fail to apply, and some well-established results in plant location theory no longer hold when demand is linear but non-uniform
Variable Transportation Rates and The Profit-Maximization Location Theory of The Firm
This paper examines the role of variable transportation rates on the independence between optimum location and demand. When transportation rates are a function of quantity and distance, it shows that the independence between optimum location and demand crucially depends upon whether the elasticities of transportation rates with respect to quantity are constant and identical ; and the ratio of marginal products is equal to the ratio of marginal tr…

Increasing Returns to Scale and Location Theory of the Firm Under Price Uncertainty
This paper shows that it is not appropriate to consider increasing returns to scale in the location theory of the firm, when the production function is assumed to be concave. The paper assumes that the production function is quasi-concave. If the marginal revenue curve cuts through the marginal cost curve from above only once, then comparative static analysis can be applied in the case of increasing returns to scale

Dupuit, Spatial Economics and Optimal Resource Allocation: A French Tradition
This paper uncovers and develops nineteenth-century engineer Jules Dupuit's pivotal role in the independent French tradition in spatial economic analysis. Dupuit's invention of market area studies and (approximately first-degree) spatial price discrimination is illustrated with a simple mathematical model. Next, Dupuit's conception of optimal toll structures and their relation to efficient transport systems, regulation, and economic welfare is an…

The Space Cost Curve and Variable Transport Costs: A General Production Function Case
This paper attempts to incorporate a production function with input substitution into the Smith model and to re-examine the basic properties and the shape of space cost curve. It has shown the space cost curve will be (i) concave from below in the distance plane, when the transport rate is constant or decreasing with distance; (ii) linear, convex or concave from below in the distance plane, when the transport rate is increasing with distance. Thi…
