Leprosy in Premodern Medicine: A Malady of the Whole Body
While premodern poets and preachers viewed leprosy as a disease of the soul, physicians in the period understood it to be a cancer of the whole body. In this innovative study, medical historian Luke Demaitre explores medical and social perspectives on leprosy at a time when judicious diagnosis could spare healthy people from social ostracization and help the afflicted get a license to beg. Extending his inquiry from the first century to late in t…

Galen and Galenism: Theory and Medical Practice from Antiquity to the European Renaissance (review)
The size and scope of the scholarly production of Luis García-Ballester (1936-2000) is documented in a seventeen-page bibliography at the end of Galen and Galenism. The eleven essays in this collection, first published between 1979 and [End Page 203] 2000 and reprinted here with their original paginations, represent a small but significant portion of his writings. The editors have arranged them as chapters, in the chronological sequence of the su…
La busqueda de la salud: Sanadores y enfermos en la Espana medieval (review)
For more than a quarter century, students of medieval medicine have drawn inspiration as well as information from Luis García-Ballester's Historia social de la medicina en la España de los siglos XIII al XVI, vol. 1, La minoría musulmana y morisca (1976). The vigorous study and intense humanity of that pathbreaking work also grace La búsqueda de la salud, which is presented as the sequel—though, interestingly, neither as "Volume 2" nor with a cor…
The Art and Science of Prognostication in Early University Medicine
Prognosis occupied a more prominent place in the medieval curriculum than it does at the modern university. Scholastic discussions were rooted in the Hippocratic Aphorisms and shaped by Galen's treatises On Crisis and On Critical Days. Medical prediction, as an art dependent on personal skills such as memory and conjecture, was taught with the aid of the liberal arts of rhetoric and logic. Scientific predictability was sought in branches of mathe…
Book Notes
The author of this book was the great-grandfather of Andreas Vesalius. His plague treatise was dedicated to "the most victorious" Francesco Sforza of Milan. It is an important source of information, particularly on five outbreaks in Brabant and Flanders between 1428 and 1454. Personal observations enliven the standard descriptions, explanations, and treatments of the epidemic. The text was, to the best of this reviewer's knowledge, never printed;…
Natura sit nobis semper Magistra: Über den Umgang mit Patienten, die Diät bei akuten Erkrankungen, Sterilität von Mann und Frau, Augenleiden; Vier mittelalterliche Schriften (review)
The healing power of nature inspires the Latin treatises edited in this volume. The four texts share the theoretical constructs and practical concerns of twelfth- and thirteenth-century medicine, but they also exemplify a broad diversity of objectives and contexts. In the first, a guide for bedside conduct, the Salernitan master Archimatheus emphasizes the importance, for both physician and patient, of a trusting relationship. The instructions pe…

Death and Dying in the Middle Ages (review)
Sweeping and simplified associations of the later Middle Ages with death, graphically reinforced by Johan Huizinga in the wake of World War I, persist in much historical discourse. Their dramatic appeal seems impervious to the accumulation and growing sophistication of studies on medieval mortality and mentalité, which are inventoried by Edelgard E. DuBruck in her introduction to this multidisciplinary collection of eighteen papers. Although most…
Ancients and Moderns in the Medical Sciences: From Hippocrates to Harvey (review)
The twelve articles in this volume were originally published between 1978 and 1997, and most of them are readily accessible in prominent journals. The collection is more than the sum of its parts, however, because it affords a panoramic view of the author's scholarship and, more important, an appreciation of its intellectual consistency across two decades. Roger French's broader erudition and more substantial publications, on subjects ranging fro…
Domesticity in Middle Dutch 'Secrets of Men and Women
This is an introductory analysis of a group of Middle Dutch texts about the 'Secrets' of female health and human procreation, which date from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Although at first sight little more than translations and adaptations of two Latin treatises widely known as Trotula and Secreta mulierum, the texts afford glimpses of their cultural context. They reveal a variety of traits which converge on the ordinary home, rather …

Medical Writing in Transition: Between Ars and Vulgus
The form and content of vernacular medicine, particularly in translations from Latin writings, differ both from scholastic learning and from popular lore. As a Middle High German version of Bernard de Gordon's Lilium medicine shows, the translator aimed for broader intelligibility than teachers, by elucidating terms and simplifying theories. Nevertheless, he also evinced a bookish superiority to lay people by his concern with precision and disdai…
