Geography as a Determinant of Health
Respiratory diseases contribute to high healthcare utilization rates among children. Although social inequalities play a major role in these conditions, little is known about the impact of geography as a determinant of health, particularly with regard to the difference between rural and urban centers. A regional geographic analysis was conducted using health repository data on singleton births between 2005 and 2010 in Alberta, Canada. Data were a…

Has the social stigma and shame once attached to unwed motherhood disappeared? A review of the Canadian popular press from 1950 to the present suggests that the stigma is now an economic one. This paper traces public attitudes toward unmarried mothers as viewed primarily through the pages of Maclean's and Chatelaine and concludes that, while the stigma now is mainly an economic one, the sense of shame surrounding unwed motherhood has not disappea…

This study explored influences on racial identity of mixed race youth who identified themselves to be part of mixed African (Black) and European (White) origin. Research questions emerged following a review of the literature identifying the ways in which views of self, family, peers and society impact youth and their racial identification. Eight in-depth interviews employing the Long Interview Method were conducted, transcribed and coded to deter…
Vitamins, minerals, and mood
In this article, the authors explore the breadth and depth of published research linking dietary vitamins and minerals (micronutrients) to mood. Since the 1920s, there have been many studies on individual vitamins (especially B vitamins and Vitamins C, D, and E), minerals (calcium, chromium, iron, magnesium, zinc, and selenium), and vitamin-like compounds (choline). Recent investigations with multi-ingredient formulas are especially promising. Ho…
