Family Chaos, Interparental Conflict, and Preschooler Adjustment
Children residing in chaotic homes exhibit greater behavior and adjustment problems. Proximal factors, such as interparental conflict, may play a role, although the ways in which these factors interplay in predicting adjustment problems is unclear. We explored different models for how chaos and conflict work together to predict child adjustment. We hypothesized that chaos would both moderate and mediate the relationship between interparental conf…
Adult Romantic Attachment and Couple Conflict Behaviors
This study investigated associations between adult romantic attachment and couplesâ€TM conflict behaviors and the potential mediating role of intimacy. A community sample of 74 couples reported on their attachment security style on the Attachment Style Measure (ASM) (Simpson, 1990) and on multiple dimensions of intimacy on the Personal Assessment of Intimacy in Relationships (PAIR) (Schaefer & Olson, 1981). Couplesâ€TM conflict behaviors were ass…
Emotion and Personality Development
A change in views about the roles of emotions in socioemotional development has taken place. Emotions were once viewed as experiential, intrapsychic events that occurred more-or-less secondarily, as by-products of more significant causal processes and phenomena. In recent years, research and theory on the study of emotions place much greater emphasis on the significance and role of emotions in social functioning and personality development. The p…
Observed Infant Reactions During Live Interparental Conflict
Associations between interparental conflict and infant reactions were examined. Infants' history of exposure to interparental conflict and infant reactive temperament were examined as moderators. A community sample of 74 infants, aged 6–14 months, participated with their parents. Behavioral observations were made of parents' marital conflict and their infants' reactions. Parents reported on their emotional states during conflict, infants' history…
Marital Conflict, Children's Representations of Family Relationships, and Children's Dispositions Towards Peer Conflict Strategies
The links among marital relations and children's representations were examined. Forty‐seven children between the ages of 5 and 8 completed the Family Stories Task (FAST) to obtain their narrative representations of family relations and performed a variation of a puppet procedure ( Mize & Ladd, 1988 ) to assess children's dispositions towards peer conflict strategies. Their parents completed a set of questionnaires regarding marital quality. Resul…
Marital Conflict, Parenting Styles, and Children's Representations of Family Relationships
Marital Conflict, Parenting Styles, and Children's Representations of Family Relationships
Objective. Consistent with the view that marital relationships are a dimension of parenting, the objective was to determine whether marital conflict predicted children's representations of family relationships, including parent - child and marital relationships. Design. To assess children's representations of family, 47 5- to 8-year-old children provided narrative descriptions in response to story stems about topics concerning multiple family sys…
