  • Racial differences in spontaneous usage of shared humanity appeals

Iva Katzarska‐miller, Stephen Reysen•ARTICLE•The Journal of Social Psychology•2025

The current research examines racial differences in spontaneous usage of shared humanity appeals, when expressing support for a marginalized group. In three studies, we examined how Black and White participants use shared humanity arguments when writing in support of Black Americans (Study 1), Muslims (Study 2), and LGBTQ+ people (Study 3). Results show that Black participants were less likely than White participants to use shared humanity appeal…

Rito Baring, Francisco A Magno et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Beliefs and Values•2022

In the present study, we investigated the influence of religious attitudes on a model of antecedents, identification, and outcomes of global citizenship using predictive quantitative tools. A total of 2,694 university students were recruited from two campuses of a large state university in southern Philippines and completed measures regarding religious attitudes and antecedents and outcomes of global citizenship identification. Data were analysed…

  • Global Human Identification and Citizenship

    Open Access•Sam Mcfarland, Justin D Hackett et al.•ARTICLE•Political Psychology•2019

We review psychological research on global human identification and citizenship, Thomas Paine’s belief that “The world is my country, and all mankind are my brethren.” In turn, we review the theoretical foundations that guided our work, research with measures that preceded our own, and our own work with our correlated scales. We review its foundations, its effects upon attitudes and behaviors, and how it might be enlarged. Global human identifica…

  • Romeo and Juliet

    Open Access•Thomas R Brooks, Stephen Reysen et al.•ARTICLE•Interpersona An International…•2018•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 50

We examined the connection between the perception of love and stigma in relationships and how much stigma needs to be present to elicit a heightened perception of love. Participants in the first study rated several relationships on the degree of stigma each one of them faced, and how much the individuals in each relationship loved each otherâ€"the perception of the Romeo and Juliet effect. In the second study, participants read a scenario of a ma…

  • Media, Family, and Friends

    Open Access•Stephen Reysen, Iva Katzarska‐miller•ARTICLE•Journal of International and…•2017•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 9

Prior research has shown that Bulgarian participants report greater global normative environment and identification with global citizens than U.S. participants; it has also shown that the relationship between country sample (U.S. vs. Bulgaria) and global citizenship identification is mediated by the perception that one’s normative environment promotes a global citizen identity. In Study 1 of the present research, we examined the number of global …

  • Global Citizenship Identification and Religiosity

Open Access•Iva Katzarska‐miller, Carole Barnsley et al.•ARTICLE•Archive for the Psychology of…•2014

In four studies we examine the associations between religiosity, global citizenship identification, and various kinds of values (e.g., exclusionary, prosocial). Across the studies, general trends emerged showing that religiosity is unrelated to global citizenship identification, and positively related to exclusionary values (e.g., sexual prejudice, ethnocentrism, restricting outgroups). However, examination of the varied motivations to be religio…

  • Further validation of a single‐item measure of social identification

    Open Access•Stephen Reysen, Iva Katzarska‐miller et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•2013•Citada por: 15•Referencias: 44

We examine the validity and reliability of a single‐item measure of social identification (SISI). Convergent validity is shown with significant positive correlations with previously published unidimensional and multidimensional measures of in‐group identification and other group‐relevant measures (e.g., entitativity and collective self‐esteem). Divergent validity is shown via nonsignificant correlations with social desirability measures. Predicti…

  • Playing Moderately Hard to Get

    Open Access•Stephen Reysen, Iva Katzarska-Miller et al.•ARTICLE•Interpersona An International…•2013•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 24

In two studies, we examined the effect of different degrees of attraction reciprocation on ratings of attraction toward a potential romantic partner. Undergraduate college student participants imagined a potential romantic partner who reciprocated a low (reciprocating attraction one day a week), moderate (reciprocating attraction three days a week), high (reciprocating attraction five days a week), or unspecified degree of attraction (no mention …

  • Perceived Relationship Dissolution and Sexual Orientation of a Hypothetical Ex-Partner as a Threat to Identity

    Open Access•Stephen Reysen, Iva Katzarska-Miller et al.•ARTICLE•Interpersona An International…•2013•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 46

We examined the effect of participantsâ€TM beliefs regarding origins of sexuality and the sexual orientation of a partner initiating the termination of a relationship on participantsâ€TM emotional experience and perceived harm to oneâ€TMs public identity. Self-identified heterosexual participants who endorsed the belief that sexual orientation is either innate or a choice were asked to imagine that a relationship partner left them for either a sa…

  • A model of global citizenship

Open Access•Stephen Reysen, Iva Katzarska‐miller•ARTICLE•International Journal of Psychology•2012

As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, exposure to global cultures affords individuals opportunities to develop global identities. In two studies, we examine the antecedents and outcomes of identifying with a superordinate identity--global citizen. Global citizenship is defined as awareness, caring, and embracing cultural diversity while promoting social justice and sustainability, coupled with a sense of responsibility to act. Prior t…
