  • Civic Engagement and Resisting “Docile Bodies” in Postsecondary Education

    Open Access•D-L Stewart, Dafina‐lazarus Stewart•ARTICLE•Teachers College Record The Voice…•2023

Background/Context: Robust civic engagement by young adults supports the aims of a democratic society, as well as college- and university-espoused commitments to the public good. Civic engagement also benefits students themselves. Although voting participation among young adults has shown modest increases from 2016 to 2020, work remains to be done to help youth become more engaged in civics. Postsecondary education has the tools to support this e…

  • Dead honky”—against technologies of (white) violence

    Dafina‐lazarus Stewart•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022•References: 7

In 1975, Saturday Night Live, a long-running sketch comedy television series, aired a sketch featuring Richard Pryor, a Black man, and Chevy Chase, a white man. During the sketch, several racial epithets were used for both Black people and white people, including the n-word. In this paper, I parallel the emotionalities displayed in that sketch to assert that as whiteness pretends to be innocent, flustered, and terrified, it nonetheless creates te…

We explore ' Unapologetic Educational Research: Addressing Anti-Blackness, Racism, and White Supremacy' to engage scholars in thinking about and reflecting on what it means to conduct qualitative research from a standpoint that honors Black lives in the research process while also disrupting racism and white supremacy. First, we unapologetically take up topics including engaging 'diversity' in qualitative research, interrogating the etic perspect…

  • Performing goodness in qualitative research methods

    Dafina‐lazarus Stewart•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 10

This essay addresses the use of diversity as a proxy for goodness in qualitative research. I argue that this presumption of goodness, operating through claims regarding participant group diversity, operates as a technology of neoliberal identity politics. Through framing diversity as a proxy for goodness, such research is performed as politically transformative, yet fails to maneuver research closer to revolution. Situated in a critical genealogy…

  • Whiteness as Collective Memory in Student Publications at Midwestern Liberal Arts Colleges, 1945–1965

    Open Access•Dafina‐lazarus Stewart•ARTICLE•American Educational Research…•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 44

In this study, I investigated how student publications portrayed whiteness as the dominant feature of the campus environment between 1945 and 1965 among the member institutions of a consortium of elite U.S. Midwestern liberal arts colleges located in rural and industrial towns across Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and western Pennsylvania. These colleges’ yearbooks and student newspapers informed this analysis of whiteness as property. Through these fi…

This book is a narrative study of the lives and experiences of sixty-eight Black collegians in a set of northern private colleges in the Midwest between 1945 and 1965. Through oral histories and archival material, this text documents and reflects on their experiences in the racially isolated, northern, rural towns in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and Western Pennsylvania. This history illuminates both the empowerment of these collegians and the persis…

  • Producing ‘docile bodies’

    Dafina‐lazarus Stewart•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 6

The US academy has been anti-democratic in philosophy and practice from its inception, seeking to discipline students as docile bodies cooperative with a white supremacist status quo. This Foucauldian analysis highlights how the academy’s historical and ongoing enforcement of discipline and normalizing judgments made the outcome of the 2016 US presidential election inevitable. Yet, this essay concludes by lifting up the consistent resistance of B…

  • Trans*versing the DMZ

    Dafina‐lazarus Stewart•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017•Cited by: 11•References: 21

Using an abductive, critical-poststructuralist autoethnographic approach, I consider the ways in which masculine of centre, non-binary/genderqueer trans* identities transverse the poles of socializing binary gender systems, structures, and norms which inform higher education. In this paper, I assert that non-binary genderqueer identities are products of a particular sense-ing about gender that is reproduced and enforced in US higher education. No…

  • Race and historiography

    Dafina‐lazarus Stewart•ARTICLE•Journal of Diversity in Higher…•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 12

This scholarly essay interrogates the seemingly necessary engagement of normative and essentialist characterizations of identity in the historical study of race in U.S. higher education. The author’s study of the experiences of Black collegians in private, liberal arts colleges in the Midwestern Great Lakes region between 1945 and 1965 grounds this discussion. Although engaging racial essentialism is necessary, the author presents alternative tre…

This article is a report of a critical constructivist study of racial identity and performance among 13 Black, traditional-age students enrolled at three different colleges, two historically Black and one predominantly White. The study’s approach understood identity to be socially constructed and reliant upon community affirmation and validation. The findings highlight (1) the role of internal community pressure, (2) the ways in which racial perf…
