Research, HIV/Aids, and Turning Waria into a Key Population in Indonesia: An Ethnographic Oral History
The history of HIV/AIDS is often told from the Global North, a viewpoint that is naturalized in policies and programs that privilege biomedical models of treatment and prevention. This article explores how one Indonesian transgender population known as waria became the subject of various forms of research since the 1980s. Research was one way that waria came to be classified as part of the key population of "transgender people." Drawing on an ora…
Combining remote and collaborative research: A critical reflection on large-scale, comparative, and interdisciplinary research in times of a global crisis
This paper examines the methodological and ethical challenges of conducting remote research on child-animal relationships across thirty communities in 17 countries during the COVID-19 pandemic. It critically assesses remote research as a mode of collaboration informed by decolonial aspirations, highlighting the complexities of navigating temporal and geographical distances, mitigating global inequalities, and addressing political and methodologic…

This article opens with a historical overview of the climate of hostility which characterised sexual and gender politics in Indonesia leading to the current …

Fieldwork, ethnography and the empirical affect montage
This contribution discusses an affectively aware methodology of ethnographic research. It highlights fieldwork as relational processes of encountering the so-called ‘other’ and discusses the methodological dilemma of ethnographers’ immersion and detachment during participant observation. We illustrate that epistemological potentials of fieldworkers’ affects, empathy, and emotion have been insufficiently discussed as a systematic methodological he…
