Mechanisms of drowning in children
INTRODUCTION: While drowning plays a particularly important role in children, the data on the physiology of drowning in this population are scarce. Both the cold shock response and the development of arrhythmias within the context of an autonomic conflict may be of particular significance during drowning. The cold shock response has now been outlined by our working group, while the effect of cold water on cardiac repolarization remains unclear. T…
Cold shock response in healthy children
The current study presents new data on the cold shock response in healthy children and the first comparison between cold water immersion and warm water immersion in this population. Data showed that immersion into 11 °C (52 °F) cold water leads to significant increases in heart rate and respiratory rate, in contrast to immersion in warm water. Remarkably, there is a lower intensity of the cold shock response in children compared to adults
Quality of Life and Mental Health Problems in Pediatric Cardiac Arrest Survivors
Background: Current research is paying more attention to neurological outcomes and quality of life after life-threatening events. Children with heart disease are particularly vulnerable, especially after resuscitation events. While newer data show that adults with heart failure and a left-ventricular assist device suffer from a higher incidence of depression, mental health in pediatric heart disease patients is poorly understood. This is the firs…
Physiologic response to distance diving in healthy children and young adults
Introduction Diving and fin swimming are well established sports, including competitive sports, but little is known about the short-term adaptation of physiological parameters in Children and Adults during submersed dynamic apnea near the individual maximum. The current study provides data on the physiological adaptation of Children and young Adults to dynamic apnea diving in real—life conditions. Methods This study provides data from 11 healthy …
