The New Trade in Heroin
This paper addresses behavioral impacts when hard drugs re-emerge as the drug of choice of a larger proportion of the American population. However, the use has increased with the youth of the nation and is no longer confined to urban inner-city population. The availability and the purity of certain drugs help to increase the incidence of heroin as an example. Risk factors are hypothesized for further investigation, but interventions that may be h…
Murder in the City
This study investigates the prevalence of homicide as an urban phenomenon. It analyzes data available for the City of Chicago, Illinois. In the year 2003, Chicago led the nation in homicides. Police there attribute it to a deadly combination of street gangs, guns, and drugs. Such an approach is far too simplistic. An effort is made with this study to identify determinants of patterns of murders that persisted for more than a decade in Chicago, de…

Violent Crime
This paper highlights the decrease in violent crime across the nation. However, causation is still to be determined. It presents research that suggest an increase in concentrated poverty is directly related to violent crime (at least, homicide rates). It presents research involving regression analysis of data available at the community area level which is unique to the city of Chicago. Chicago has experienced an increase in its homicide rate desp…
The Prevention of School Violence
