Concern regarding the diversion and non-medical use of prescription pharmaceuticals continues to grow as anecdotal evidence and other research points to a sizeable increase in the illegal market for such drugs. Our feminist cross-national comparative study explored the informal and nonformal education and learning of women politicians in Canada and India. Using individual interviews, focus groups, surveys and observations of training sessions we compared and contrasted socio-cultural contexts, challenges, education and learning philosophies, and diverse practices. The findings show that training programmes and the women themselves placed an emphasis on …
A feminist study of a political education programme for women
Women’s Campaign School (WCS) is a non-partisan, non-formal three-day educational programme held annually in Vancouver, to empower and inspire women to enter politics and as a means towards socio-political change. Our findings show the WCS provides excellent practical and tactical skills and an experiential learning opportunity that is highly valued by women. However, few felt the lens was feminist and it did little to challenge ingrained gendere…
Accidental Fatalities Among Heroin Users in South Australia, 1994-1997
A total of 101 accidental deaths were identified among heroin users in South Australia for the period 1994-1997. Mean age at death was 29.9 years. Cases typically involved a single, unemployed, Caucasian male in his late twenties with a history of heroin and other drug use. Two or more drug types were detected in 80% of cases. The total number of substance types identified increased significantly with age. In comparison to younger fatalities, alc…

An evidence-based intervention addressing overdose among heroin users was developed and evaluated in South Australia. The intervention comprised three strands: information materials, peer educator training and achievement of structural change through the establishment of partnerships with user groups, police and ambulance services.
