Using Lext laser-scanning confocal microscopy to identify enamel surface defects in archaeological caribou dentition
Applying GIS and statistical analysis to assess the correlation of human behaviour and ephemeral architectural features among Palaeo-Eskimo sites on Southern Baffin Island, Nunavut
Combining chert provenance and least-cost pathway analyses to reconstruct Pre-Dorset and Dorset mobility on southern Baffin Island
Explorations in Lext image and profile capture for dental enamel surface morphology
Manual Point Cloud Classification and Extraction for Hunter-Gatherer Feature Investigation
For archaeologists, the task of processing large terrestrial laser scanning (TLS)-derived point cloud data can be difficult, particularly when focusing on acquiring analytical and interpretive outcomes from the data. Using our TLS lidar data collected in 2013 from two compositionally different, low Arctic multi-component hunter-gatherer sites (LdFa-1 and LeDx-42), we demonstrate how a manual point cloud classification approach with open source so…
A human-centered GIS approach to modeling mobility on southern Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada
Southern Baffin Island has been occupied for several millennia, but its enormous size, coupled with scarcity of identified inland archaeological sites that can be confidently linked to coastal occupations, makes modeling ancient seasonal mobility across the region through traditional cost-surface least-cost pathway approaches impractical. We present a method that combines weighted multi-criteria cost surface analysis with a watershed function to …
Characterizing southern Baffin Island chert
Pre-Dorset Culture
This chapter summarizes our current understanding of the widespread and diverse Pre-Dorset culture, known from the central and eastern parts of the Canadian Arctic between 4500 and 2700 B.P. The Pre-Dorset were mobile foragers, moving across the landscape to exploit seasonally available land and sea mammals in different locales, although the extent of their movements varied considerably. The lithic component of their technology has been more inte…
Combined Geophysical Approach in a Complex Arctic Archaeological Environment
In 2014, we mapped the complex landscape of component Area 5 at LdFa‐1, a 3000‐year‐old Palaeoeskimo site located in the deep interior of southern Baffin Island, using a combined magnetic and electromagnetic approach to define the physical characteristics of any large‐ or small‐scale anthropogenic anomalies. Measurements were made using a GEM Systems Overhauser magnetometer‐gradiometer and Geonics EM31 instrument, and a survey configuration desig…
Characterization of Chert Artifacts and Two Newly Identified Chert Quarries on Southern Baffin Island
Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) trace element analysis was used to characterize raw chert from one secondary (LeDx-42) and two primary (LbDt-1 and LdDx-2) sources on southern Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada. Raw chert trace element data are compared to ICP-MS trace element data for chert artifacts from a nearby Palaeo-Eskimo archaeological site (LeDx-42). Geochemical consistencies identified among the analyzed samples support…
A combined visual-geochemical approach to establishing provenance for pegmatite quartz artifacts
Combining visual and geochemical analyses to source chert on Southern Baffin Island, Arctic Canada
A combined methodological approach using visual and geochemical methods is introduced and preliminary results of a study illustrating its effectiveness to determine chert source provenance are presented. This study focuses on lithic debitage and raw chert samples collected from the interior of southern Baffin Island, Arctic Canada. Chert is abundant throughout this region yet it occurs as small, scattered surface nodules that are highly variable …
Colonization, Structured Landscapes and Seasonal Mobility
Palaeo-Eskimo Novice Flintknapping in the Eastern Canadian Arctic
Data from two inland Palaeo-Eskimo sites on southern Baffin Island are evidence for novice flintknapping. The interior of the island boasts a rich and reliable supply of lithic raw material, and the two sites were occupied during the Artic warm season when access to it was unrestricted. The use of a direct procurement strategy to acquire the material at this time of year from such a localized source suggests that acquisition activities were struc…
Identifying Pre-Dorset structural features on southern Baffin Island
This paper describes an isolated Pre-Dorset component found at the Tungatsivvik (KkDo-3) site on southern Baffin Island. Micro-debitage analysis and systematic core sampling are proposed as a combined strategy to facilitate future investigations of Pre-Dorset occupations in this region
Going to the Birds
The Mosquito Ridge site is located near the Great Plain of the Koukdjuak in the interior of south central Baffin Island. This plain supports hundreds of thousands of nesting waterfowl every year throughout the spring and summer. During the annual moult these birds present a rich and reliable food source for human populations in the region. Typically, subsistence strategies in the Arctic warm season are synonymous with caribou hunting and not with…
Joint Enterprises in the Malaysian Agricultural Sector
The corner-stone of Malaysia's1 rural development strategy consists of schemes designed to move the rural population from the traditional subsistence farming and smallholder sector to the modern plantation sector. The largest and most successful of these schemes were those carried out by the Federal Land Develop ment Authority (FELDA).2 In the last ten years, however, the government has become interested in a different strategy to achieve the sam…
Corporatism in the Asean Countries
The systems of government in the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries have been variously described and classified. The Indonesian Government, for example, has been referred to as polity, authoritarianism, military bureaucratic and neo-patrimonial capitalist. The Philippine system has been identified as' 'constitutional authoritarian ism, technocratic autocracy, and even as conjugal dictator ship. Recently, both these countrie…
