Fairy tales in gender-based violence campaigns
Fairy tales are not mere bedtime stories. Originally conceived to convey a moral, these folk narratives often transmit and perpetuate gender stereotypes. They even serve to promote and legitimize, at times, violence against women. Their pernicious effects on fostering and justifying all forms of abuse against women have resulted in their use in several campaigns aimed at raising awareness of violence against girls and women. Drawing from Julia Kr…
Animal Images and Gender and Colonial Violence in Colleen Murphy ́s Pig Girl
Based on the real story of pig farmer Robert Pickton, a serial killer charged with the murders of twenty-six women in his farm in Canada, Pig Girl (2015) exploits animal images to convey the terror and torture of one of his victims, tellingly named Dying Woman. Adopting a postcolonial and gender approach, this article studies how Colleen Murphy uses the bestial iconography in Pig Girl to tackle gender-based violence, particularly towards marginal…
An Exploration of Animal Metaphors in Gender-Based Violence Campaigns
This article explores the use of animal metaphors in gender-based violence campaigns. It analyzes a purpose-built corpus consisting of 39 public-awareness campaigns that run between 1998 to 2023 across 21 countries that resort to animal metaphors in the representation of the female victim and/or the male abuser. Through the lens of Conceptual Metaphor Theory, the results revealed that campaigns reproduce common zoomorphic tropes associated with e…

The Theory and Practice of Utopia in Our Troubled Times
Amid current global crises, the international conference “The Knock at the Door: Utopian Dreams for Post-Covid Times,” jointly organized by the University of Huelva (Spain) and the University of Calgary (Canada) on May 21–24, 2023, at the University of Huelva, provided a forum for reflecting upon the role played by speculative fiction in (re)imagining better futures, while remaining vigilant to possible threats and dangers. The title of the confe…
Importance of Timely Treatment Initiation in Infantile-Onset Pompe Disease, a Single-Centre Experience
Classic infantile Pompe disease (IPD) is a rare lysosomal storage disorder characterized by severe hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and profound muscle weakness. Without treatment, death occurs within the first 2 years of life. Although enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) with alglucosidase alfa has improved survival, treatment outcome is not good in many cases and is largely dependent on age at initiation. The objective of the study was (a) to analyse t…
