  • Active love” in The Brothers Karamazov and in Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit, or what Dostoevsky passed over in silence

    Open Access•Слободанка Владив-Гловер•ARTICLE•Studies in East European Thought•2025•References: 4

The paper considers the literary resonance of Hegel’s philosophy of the state and ethical consciousness in relation to the concept of “active love,” first used by Hegel in his Phenomenology of Spirit (1807) and subsequently by Dostoevsky in his last novel, in Zosima’s homilies ( besedy ). The reading of “active love” in The Brothers Karamazov in the Hegelian philosophical context suggests a new understanding of the ethical message of the novel. T…

  • Constructivism’s Vešč, Objet, Gegenstand and the New Art of the “Object”

    Open Access•Slobodanka Vladiv-Glover, Слободанка Владив-Гловер•ARTICLE•Transcultural Studies•2017

There is no doubt that the Futurists, Constructivists, Productionists – all the Russian avant-garde groups – wanted to represent the “new world” of socialism in and through art. However, the relationship between art and life, or art and work in the new socialist state was not one-dimensional. This can be seen from a close reading of one of the major Constructivist manifestoes, published in Ilya Erenburg’s and El Lisitzky’s short-lived journal “Ve…

  • Writing as Sacrilege and Necessity

    Open Access•Slobodanka Vladiv-Glover, Слободанка Владив-Гловер•ARTICLE•Transcultural Studies•2015

The paper interprets the collection of stories as a unified generic whole with precedents in the literary canon of former Yugoslavia and in world literature. The stories, united by the sujet of suffering, play with the transgression of myths, from Ancient to Christian, in order to establish sacrilege as poetics and as the necessity of writing

  • Fin-de-siècle Lyrical Drama and the European Modernist Sensibility on the Eve of World War One

    Open Access•Slobodanka Vladiv-Glover, Слободанка Владив-Гловер•ARTICLE•Transcultural Studies•2015

The paper analyses the relationship of lyrical drama, which emerged as the dominant genre of European Modernism, and opera, representing a paradigm shift in European thought on the eve of World War One. The musical metaphor of love-death, originating in Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde, was adopted widely and transposed into verbal art by the dramatists and prose-writers of Modernism in Eastern and Western Europe. This metaphor or leit-motif is read i…

    Open Access•Slobodanka Vladiv-Glover, Слободанка Владив-Гловер•ARTICLE•Transcultural Studies•2014

Miles Franklin’s sketches from the Balkan front are discussed in the context of Franklin as an Australian writer of “the soil” whose observations of the Serbian soldiers and life in the hospital camp on the Salonika front take the form of sketches of manners. The sketch of manners is announced in the literary manifestoes of the French, the English and the Russians as part of a poetics of Realism in the European literary canon. These prescribe the…

  • Belief in Zamyatin’s we and Tarkovsky’s Stalker

    Open Access•Slobodanka Vladiv-Glover, Слободанка Владив-Гловер•ARTICLE•Transcultural Studies•2013

The paper offers a comparative analyses of a novel and a film with a science fiction theme, but instead of interpreting the theme, the analysis interprets the structure of the two works. The claim is made that the narrative structure of a work (which, according to the Structuralist model, is much more encompassing than the linear narrative) is implicated in the construction of belief and value. On analysis, the value constructed in Zamyatin’s nov…

  • Poststructuralism in Georgia

    Slobodanka Vladiv-Glover, Слободанка Владив-Гловер•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2010

The philosophical works of Merab Mamardashvili are part of the (re-)emergence of phenomenological thought on the “margins” of the Eastern European sphere, appropriating and mediating a version of French poststructuralism in the “Soviet” 1980s, in which deconstruction constitutes both method and content. More specifically, Mamardashvili uses Descartes as the point de repère for his investigations into the phenomenology of the object of knowledge a…

  • The Poetics of Pastiche in Eco's Postmodern Detective Novel

    Slobodanka Vladiv-Glover, Слободанка Владив-Гловер•ARTICLE•The European Legacy•2008

While the traditional boulevard novel of Eugène Sue wants to entertain and sell, Umberto Eco's boulevard novel wants to entertain and educate the contemporary reader in Italian history and in a form of modern semiotic theory. However, Eco's educational mission does not transform the low genre of the boulevard novel but remains bound by its limitations of “rhetoric and ideology.” Eco's reader is left with a representation of history as pastiche an…
