  • The Joy of Following

    Open Access•Ricky Crano•ARTICLE•Deleuze and Guattari Studies•2022

This article deploys Spinoza’s ethic of joy alongside Deleuze and Guattari’s exposition of micropolitics to expose how fascist desires and affects bloom and circulate through digital communications ecosystems that generally promote a diffusion or decentralisation of power. Beyond the steady barrage of alt-right content conscientiously documented by liberal journalists and progressive watchdogs, a more persistent and widespread fascist impulse per…

  • Room without Room

    Open Access•Ricky Crano•ARTICLE•M/C Journal•2021

Not only is it weirdly hard to evaluate what you yourself look like ... but it turned out that consumers’ instinctively skewed self-perception, plus vanity-related stress, meant that they began preferring and then outright demanding videophone masks that were really quite a lot better-looking than they themselves were in person. High-def mask-entrepreneurs were ready and willing to supply not just verisimilitude but aesthetic enhancement. — David…

  • A Context for Complexism

    Open Access•Ricky Crano, Ricky D Crano•ARTICLE•Open Cultural Studies•2018

Among the many genres of visual art to emerge in the wake of computerisation, the subset of generative or algorithmic art known as complexism seems uniquely keyed to the social and technological mainsprings of everyday life in the twenty-first century. Complexism typically deploys computer algorithms to demonstrate how complex phenomena can emerge through the reiterative enactment of simple rulesets. The light and sound installations and the vide…

  • Neoliberal Epistemology and the Truth in Fake News (Self-Writing/Self-Enterprise/Self-Control)

    Ricky D’andrea Crano, Ricky Crano•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2018•References: 13

Taking cues from Michel Foucault’s late work on ancient cultures of self-care, this article argues that the success of neoliberalism is bound up with an epistemological critique of modernity forged by the movement’s founding theorists. This critique takes aim at three distinct intellectual currents – the socialist, the rationalist, and the pastoral – and thus marks a tripartite break from modern techniques of power and subjectivation. I contend t…

  • Genealogy, Virtuality, War (1651/1976)

    Open Access•Ricky Crano•ARTICLE•Foucault Studies•2011•Cited by: 1

This article recounts Foucault’s critical reevaluation of Thomas Hobbes in his 1975-76 lecture course, published as Society Must Be Defended (2003). In probing Hobbes’ pivotal role in the foundation of the modern nation-state, Foucault delineates the ”philosophico-juridical” discourse of Leviathan from the ”historico-political” discourses of the English insurrectionists whose uncompromising demands were ultimately paved over by the more conventio…
