  • Dietary Reconstruction of Pliocene–Pleistocene Mammoths and Elephants (Proboscidea) from Northern Greece Based on Dental Mesowear Analysis

Open Access•Christos Tsakalidis, George E Konidaris et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2025

Dental wear analyses of extinct animals offer key insights into their dietary preferences and in turn contribute substantially to palaeoenvironmental reconstructions, leading to more accurate interpretations about past ecosystems. This study employs dental mesowear analysis on Pliocene and Pleistocene elephants and mammoths from several localities in Northern Greece (Ptolemais Basin, Mygdonia Basin, Drama Basin, and the Neapolis-Grevena Basin), a…

  • The Paradise Lost of Milia (Grevena, Greece; Late Pliocene, Early Villafranchian, MN15/MN16a): Faunal Composition and Diversity

Open Access•Evangelos Vlachos, Evangelia Tsoukala et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2018

    (1) Background: Over the last decades, important fossil records of Late Pliocene mammals and reptiles have been unearthed in Milia, Grevena (N Greece). This assemblage shows a remarkable composition and diversity, including the partial skeletons of mastodons that reached record-breaking sizes, abundant rhinos—the first occurrence of this species in Greece—and some new species; (2) Methods: We perform a thorough quantitative analysis of the recove…

  • Middle Pleistocene (Early Toringian) Carnivore Remains from Northern Israel

Open Access•Eitan Tchernov, Evangelia Tsoukala et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1997

Seventy well-preserved fossil remains from deposits of an eroded karstic cave in the Upper Galilee of northern Israel include Ursus deningeri (Ursidae), Canis lupus cf. mosbachensis (Canidae), Crocuta crocuta cf. praespelaea (Hyaenidae), Panthera leo cf. spelaea (Felidae), and Dama sp. (Cervidae). This assemblage probably dates to the Early Toringian (MQ2, Middle Pleistocene). Ursus deningeri and Panthera leo cf. spelaea have never before been re…
