Assessment of the nutritional status of elderly in Western Pyreneans. Data on 800 indigenous males taking part in the Hipval project
Our aim was to assess the nutritional status of elderly males from Western Pyrenees, a particular zone of interest as regards genetics, health and culture. A total of 828 individuals aged 60 or more, indigenous to one of the geographic subdivisions and predominantly living at home, were assessed using the body mass index (BMI), the mini-nutritional assessment (MNA) and a social survey questionnaire. No cases of under-nutrition were detected by th…
Biochemical diversity and genetic distances in the Pitheciinae subfamily (primates, platyrrhini)
Protein electrophoretic variability in Saimiri and the question of its species status
An electrophoretic survey of 15 protein systems (22 loci) was employed to determine the genetic relationships among 9 populations (441 individuals) of South American squirrel monkeys ( Saimiri sciureus sciureus, S. sciureus boliviensis , and S. sciureus ustus ). Genetic markers capable of differentiating the second from the two other taxa were observed mainly in the ADA and GPI systems. Heterogeneity for ADA and CA2 between populations from oppos…
Divergence between biochemical and cytogenetic differences in three species of the Callicebus moloch group
Specimens from three species of the Callicebus moloch group—C. Moloch (N = 80), C. brunneus (N = 166), and C. cupreus (N = 23)—were studied. Twenty genetic loci were investigated through electrophoresis, genetic distances were estimated, and the results compared with the available cytogenetic data. Low values of genetic distance were encountered, contrasting with relatively large chromosome differences. We propose that recent karyotypic rearrange…
Natural hybridization betweenSaimiri taxa in the Peruvian Amazonia
Carbonic anhydrase II in new world monkeys
Reproduction of the owl monkey ( Aotus nancymai ) (primates: (Cebidae) in captivity
There are few reports and poorly documented field studies about the reproductive biology of the owl monkey ( Aotus spp.). Reproductive data were collected from a breeding colony of owl monkeys ( Aotus nancymai ) held at the Center for Reproduction and Conservation of Non‐Human Primates in Iquitos, Peru, for the past 10 years. Seventy nine breeding pairs have produced 180 offspring in a period of 3,619 months, representing an average of about one …
