  • Decolonizing Queer Experience

    Emily Channell-Justice•EDITOR•BOOK•Decolonizing Queer Experience•2020

In Eastern Europe and Eurasia, LGBT+ individuals face repression by state forces and non-state actors who attempt to reinforce their vision of traditional social values. Decolonizing Queer Experience moves beyond discourses of oppression and repression to explore the resistance and resilience of LGBT+ communities who are remaking the post-socialist world; they refuse domination from local heteronormative expectations and from global LGBT+ movemen…

  • Time for Intensive Change’

    Emily Channell-Justice•ARTICLE•Revolutionary Russia•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 14

This paper engages with the analytical category of ‘revolution’, drawing from contemporary and historical examples. Based on ethnographic research with leftist activists in Ukraine during the entire period of Euromaidan in 2013–14, I question the assumption that this should be accepted as a revolutionary event. It suggests that the researcher’s positionality impacts how this diversity is seen, interpreted, and analyzed. Drawing from scholarship on engaged anthropology and ethnographic research during the 2013–2014 Euromaidan mobilizations, I show how fragmentation among leftists had a dual…

  • We’re Not Just Sandwiches”

    Emily S Channell-Justice, Emily Channell-Justice•ARTICLE•Signs: Journal of Women in…•2017•Cited by: 5•References: 15

This article discusses Ukrainian feminists’ attempts to “vernacularize” feminism, to use Sally Engle Merry’s term, in the context of the 2013–14 mass mobilizations in Ukraine. Based on extensive participant observation during the entire span of the protests as well as on interviews with feminist activists, I suggest that feminists’ attempts to intervene in the mobilizations faced major challenges because of their consistent marginalization in Ukr…
