  • Conversations on Dictionaries

Open Access•William A Ross, Esther Schor et al.•BOOK•Conversations on Dictionaries•2025

How did dictionaries come to be? When and how did they originate in a specific language? Who was involved in that origin story? How have they evolved over time? What is the tension between scholarly and commercial, and between prescriptive and descriptive, dictionaries? What is the politics behind each dictionary? And what is the connection between dictionaries and nation-building? This fascinating book has the answers. It brings together a colle…

  • I Dizionari Dei Sinonimi E Il Loro Uso Nella Tradizione Italiana

    Claudio Marazzini•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2004•References: 1

Dictionaries of synonyms were a test bed for the 19th century Italian debate on the ‘questione della lingua’. Italian followers of the Enlightenment thought the language had to be set free from worthless and ‘harmful’ synonyms, including phonetic variants and truncated words used in poetry. When Ital…

  • Langue primitive et comparatisme dans le système de Carlo Denina

    Open Access•Claudio Marazzini•ARTICLE•Histoire Épistémologie Langage•1984

Nowadays, La clef des langues (1804) of C. Denina is known to scholars: it has been presented in Historiographia linguistica, 1983-1/ 2. My new intervention considers the characteristics of Denina's comparativism. He was guided by a strong sense of history; in fact Denina would found the inquiry on the research of concrete data. The problem of the primitive language was irrelevant. For Denina, it is necessary to compare only the languages that ha…

  • Carlo Denina linguiste

    Claudio Marazzini•ARTICLE•Historiographia Linguistica•1983•Cited by: 1•References: 1
