  • War Was Taking Place

    Federico Leoni, Chiasmi International•ARTICLE•Chiasmi International•2023

Merleau-Ponty’s article, “La guerre a eu lieu”, contains, as has been said, a kind of new phenomenology of perception. Its research question could be formulated as follows. What prevented German-occupied France from perceiving the enemy as an enemy for so many months or years of alienating cohabitation? The “drôle de guerre” would, among other things, be linked to this singular perceptual impasse. An impasse that is as dramatic as instructive, si…

  • An Ecology without Nature? Merleau-Ponty, Simondon, Latour

    Federico Leoni, Chiasmi International•ARTICLE•Chiasmi International•2022

The article examines the main features of Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy of nature and, more specifically, the reasons that led it to some consonance with that of the young Simondon. At the center of this recognition, the question of processuality and the pre-Socratic suggestions about a philosophy of the elements. The aim is to derive a need, which, if it remained unfulfilled in Merleau-Ponty, was instead expressed in Simondon and in many contempora…

  • La telepatia e la macchia. Mirror neurons e monadologie merleau-pontyane

    Federico Leoni, Chiasmi International•ARTICLE•Chiasmi International•2020

A meditation on specularity as paradigms of a theory of experience which informs every field of philosophy and human sciences, including contemporary neurosciences. And a meditation, starting from neurosciences and mirror neurons, on the different readings of this paradigm of specularity and specularization. In particular, on that “second” reading of specularization, which suggests that the mirror is not an instrument of representation but of exp…

This paper presents a subset of approximately 300 funeral posters, taken from a collection of some 1300 such items photographed in Naples and its Province, and giving the deceased person's nickname indicating his or her art or craft. After poin-ting out how the use of dialect in naming the art or craft sets the intended public of these posters apart from the general population of Naples, the paper goes on to list the posters by category, commenti…

  • Digital Phenotyping

    Open Access•Giovanni Stanghellini, Federico Leoni•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2020

This paper explores the potential threats of digital phenotyping and the ways it may redesign our body experience and conceptualization. We argue that technology in digital medicine, and in psychiatry in particular, is not merely an extrinsic device to achieve improvements in knowledge, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases; rather, it intrinsically and unavoidably implies potential effects on what it is to be a human person, namely the embodiment…

  • Genetics, Linguistics and the ‘Serial Founder Effect’. A Case Study

    Open Access•Federico Albano Leoni, Federico Leoni•ARTICLE•Histoire Épistémologie Langage•2016•References: 2

After a brief discussion of the relation holding between linguistics and genetics, the paper will focus on three assumptions: a) that statistics can be reliably applied to phonology; b) that there is a relation between the size of a human population and the diversity of its phonetic system; c) that the so-called founder effect reduces phonemic diversity. The author will seek to demonstrate that all three assumptions are incorrect

  • Les parties et le tout

    Open Access•Federico Albano Leoni, Federico Leoni•ARTICLE•Histoire Épistémologie Langage•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 2

    Federico Leoni•ARTICLE•PARADIGMI•2013

In…

  • Attualitŕ di Bühler

    Federico Albano Leoni, Federico Leoni•ARTICLE•PARADIGMI•2011

Open Access•Federico Albano Leoni, Federico Leoni•ARTICLE•Histoire Épistémologie Langage•2007

  • From Maine de Biran to the 'Motor Theory' of speech

Federico Albano Leoni, Federico Leoni et al.•ARTICLE•Historiographia Linguistica•1996•Cited by: 1•References: 7

The basic idea of the modern Motor Theory of Speech Perception (Liberman et al. 1963) is that "the perception of speech is tightly linked to the feedback from the speaker's own articulatory movements". In this paper we try to show how the same idea was already formulated by the French philosopher Maine de Biran (1805) and taken up in the second half of the 19th century by psychologists (like Steinthal) and linguists (like Kruszewski and Paul). Ho…

  • The beginnings of phonology in Italy

    Federico Albano Leoni, Federico Leoni•ARTICLE•Historiographia Linguistica•1992•References: 3

It is known that structural phonology (and, more generally, structural linguistics) began in Italy later than in other European countries. In the general opinion, this was due to the hegemony of Benedetto Croces's philosophy during the years between World War I and his death in 1952. This paper shows how an early attempt to give a structural description of Italian phonology (Porru 1939) encountered an exceptionally harsh review (Pisani 1939), whi…
