Dalia Regos-Stewart, Karen W Yeh et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Distress and…•2026

Introduction This study aims to validate homelessness indicator variables found in COVID-19 hospitalization data from Los Angeles County (LAC).Method COVID-19 positive inpatients from LAC hospitals were identified as presumed People Experiencing Homelessness (PEH) with indicators derived from medical record address information, ICD-10 diagnoses codes and a homelessness flag required in COVID-19 mandated surveillance reporting. Analyses were condu…

  • A Covid-19 Vaccination Program to Promote Uptake and Equity for People Experiencing Homelessness in Los Angeles County

Andrew Carverhill, Allison D Rosen et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2023•References: 8

People experiencing homelessness (PEH) have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19, yet their vaccination coverage is lower than is that of the general population. We implemented a COVID-19 vaccination program that used evidence-based and culturally tailored approaches to promote vaccine uptake and equity for PEH in Los Angeles County, California. From February 2021 through February 2022, 33 977 doses of vaccine were administered at 2658 cl…

  • Mutation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Implications for Using Whole-Genome Sequencing for Investigating Recent Tuberculosis Transmission

Open Access•Kristin N Nelson, Sarah Talarico et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Tuberculosis (TB) control programs use whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of Mycobacterium tuberculosis ( Mtb ) for detecting and investigating TB case clusters. Existence of few genomic differences between Mtb isolates might indicate TB cases are the result of recent transmission. However, the variable and sometimes long duration of latent infection, combined with uncertainty in the Mtb mutation rate during latency, can complicate interpretation of W…

  • Perceptions of Homeless Adults and Their Providers on Coping With the Impact of Covid-19 Pandemic on Mental Health, Substance Use, and Harm Reduction Services

Open Access•Adeline M Nyamathi, Lillian Gelberg et al.•ARTICLE•Global Qualitative Nursing Research•2022

Adults experiencing homelessness experience a disproportionate burden of health disparities which has further exacerbated mental health, substance use, and coping during the COVID-19 pandemic. As limited data is available to understand the experience of adults experiencing homelessness and their health during this time, the purpose of this study was to explore how COVID-19 may have impacted their mental health, substance use, and ways of coping i…

  • Covid-19 Vaccine Acceptability and Financial Incentives among Unhoused People in Los Angeles County

Open Access•Allison D Rosen, Jacqueline Beltran et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Health•2022•Cited by: 1

Unhoused people have higher COVID-19 mortality and lower vaccine uptake than housed community members. Understanding vaccine hesitancy among unhoused people is key for developing programs that address their unique needs. A three-round, rapid, field-based survey was conducted to describe attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccination. Round 1 assessed vaccine brand preference, round 2 assessed intention to accept a financial incentive for vaccination, and …

  • Challenging Health Inequities in Tuberculosis Elimination

    Alicia H Chang•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2022•References: 8

  • Correlates of depression and anxiety among homeless adults with latent tuberculosis infection

Open Access•Dana Rose Garfin, Donald E Morisky et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2022•References: 28

Homeless persons have disproportionate rates of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). LTBI treatment can prevent and reduce active tuberculosis spread. We examined associations between mental health, social support, and perceptions of general health in 50 LTBI-positive, homeless adults enrolled in LTBI treatment. Depression and anxiety prevalence were 40% and 48%, respectively. Depression was negatively associated with general health, positive so…

  • Engaging the Community in Designing a Hepatitis C Virus Treatment Program for Adults Experiencing Homelessness

    Open Access•Adeline M Nyamathi, Sarah Wall et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 58

Despite the availability of cure for hepatitis C virus (HCV), people experiencing homelessness (PEH) are challenged with initiating and completing HCV treatment. The design of culturally sensitive HCV treatment programs is lacking. The objective was to employ community-based participatory research methods to understand perceptions of HCV-positive PEH, and providers, on the design and delivery of a culturally sensitive, nurse-led community health …

  • Acceptability and Feasibility of a Nurse-Led, Community Health Worker Partnered Latent Tuberculosis Medication Adherence Model for Homeless Adults

Open Access•Benissa E Salem, Erin Klansek et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Homeless adults are at increased risk of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), which can lead to active tuberculosis (TB) disease. The purpose of this study was to assess acceptability and feasibility of a six-month, nurse-led, community health worker-partnered short-course treatment (3HP) LTBI adherence model for a high risk, LTBI positive, homeless population. Informed by our community advisory board (CAB) and community-based participatory rese…

  • Spatial distribution of tuberculosis incidence in Los Angeles County

Open Access•Adam Readhead, Alicia H Chang et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

This study highlights areas of high TB incidence within Los Angeles County both for U.S.-born cases and for cases born in Mexico, Vietnam or the Philippines. It also highlights areas that had high incidence rates even when accounting for non-spatial error and country of birth, age, sex, and years since initial arrival in the U.S. Information on spatial distribution provided here complements other descriptions of local disease burden and may help …

The results showed that Mandarin-speaking parents talked about number more frequently than English-speaking parents. Further, the…

  • Gender Biases in Early Number Exposure to Preschool-Aged Children

Open Access•Alicia Chang, Alicia H Chang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Social…•2011•References: 39

Despite dramatically narrowing gender gaps, women remain underrepresented in mathematics and math-related fields. Parents can shape expectations and interests, which may predict later differences in achievement and occupational choices. This study examines children’s early mathematical environments by observing the amount that mothers talk to their sons and daughters (mean age 22 months) about cardinal number, a basic precursor to mathematics. In…
