  • The Age and Time Dynamics of Pro‐Sociality, Autonomy, and Well‐Being

    Open Access•Yunxiang Chen, Martin F Lynch•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Journal of Psychology•2026

Previous research consistently highlights a positive relationship between pro‐sociality and well‐being, often mediated by autonomy. However, limited attention has been paid to exploring the temporal dynamics of this relationship across age cohorts and historical periods. This study conducts a cross‐sectional cohort analysis using global data from the World Values Survey ( N = 360,244; 109 countries) to examine age and period effects across adulth…

  • Moral Development during Emerging Adulthood

    Open Access•Alexander Eustice-Corwin, Alexander Eustice‐Corwin et al.•ARTICLE•Human Development•2023

Moral development during emerging adulthood is a topic of growing interest. Several different theories within the study of human development appear to converge on this point of inquiry, as the study of moral development during emerging adulthood recruits different areas of expertise. This paper explores different theoretical approaches to the study of moral development during emerging adulthood and demonstrates the need for interdisciplinary coll…

  • Basic Needs in Other Cultures

    Open Access•Martin F Lynch, Nailya R Salikhova et al.•ARTICLE•Психология. Журнал Высшей школы…•2020

Self-Determination Theory (SDT) has grown substantially over the past 30 years. Much of that growth stems from the theory’s rigorous empirical foundations and the elegance of the theory itself. Yet most of SDT’s empirical support has been quantitative, with little attention to the possible contributions of a qualitative approach. This paper details two recent, qualitative studies of motivation in the realm of education that address critical issue…

  • Freedom and responsibility go together

Open Access•Kennon M Sheldon, Tamara Gordeeva et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Personality•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 30

In three cross-cultural studies we tested the premise that psychological freedom (aka autonomy) and personal responsibility are complementary rather than conflicting, and the further premise that freedom causes responsibility, rather than vice versa. In all studies, (a) supporting autonomy in an experimental context increased responsibility-taking after failure, whereas emphasizing responsibility did not; (b) measures of dispositional autonomy an…

  • Conditional Regard, Self-Concept, and Relational Authenticity

    Open Access•Martin F Lynch, Kennon M Sheldon•ARTICLE•Journal of Humanistic Psychology•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 23

The present cross-cultural study utilized contemporary statistical techniques to explore the associations among conditional regard, ideal and actual self-concept, and relational authenticity, constructs with deep roots in the Rogerian and humanistic traditions. In three countries (China, Russia, and the United States), the experience of conditional regard in past and present relationships predicted larger discrepancies between ideal and actual se…

  • Testing satisfaction of basic psychological needs as a mediator of the relationship between socioeconomic status and physical and mental health

Open Access•Maynor G González, Dena Phillips Swanson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2016•Cited by: 17•References: 36

This research applied self-determination theory to examine the degree to which satisfaction of basic psychological needs for autonomy, relatedness, and competence explained the association between socioeconomic status and physical and mental health outcomes, while controlling for age, exercise, and smoking status. This was a survey research study with 513 full-time employees in professions representative of a hierarchal organization. The results …

  • Predictors of Older Adults' Technology Use and Its Relationship to Depressive Symptoms and Well-being

    Andrew J Elliot, Christopher J Mooney et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2013•Cited by: 12•References: 5

Findings do not support the claim that ICT use directly enhances mental health or well-being among older adults although it may protect against depressive symptoms for individuals coping with health conditions other than ADL impairments

  • Using Multilevel Modeling in Counseling Research

    Martin F Lynch•ARTICLE•Measurement and Evaluation in…•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 5

This conceptual and practical overview of multilevel modeling (MLM) for researchers in counseling and development provides guidelines on setting up SPSS to perform MLM and an example of how to present the findings. It also provides a discussion on how counseling and developmental researchers can use MLM to address their own research questions

  • Motivation and Autonomy in Counseling, Psychotherapy, and Behavior Change

    Open Access•Richard M Ryan, Martin F Lynch et al.•ARTICLE•The Counseling Psychologist•2010•Cited by: 27•References: 171

Motivation has received increasing attention across counseling approaches, presumably because clients’ motivation is key for treatment effectiveness. The authors define motivation using a self-determination theory taxonomy that conceptualizes motivation along a relative-autonomy continuum. The authors apply the taxonomy in discussing how various counseling approaches address client motivation and autonomy, both in theory and in practice. The auth…

  • Autonomy as Process and Outcome

    Open Access•Martin F Lynch, Maarten Vansteenkiste et al.•ARTICLE•The Counseling Psychologist•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 23

Three commentators (Carter, 2011; Kim, 2011; Scheel, 2011) concurred with a central proposition of the target article (Ryan, Lynch, Vansteenkiste, & Deci, 2011): that client motivation for counseling is of critical importance to counselors and therapists. In this Reply, we acknowledge and address a number of issues raised by the commentators, including the role of motivation and autonomy in multicultural counseling, the issue of common factors in…

    Open Access•Valery Chirkov, Maarten Vansteenkiste et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2007•Cited by: 17•References: 47

  • The antecedents and consequences of autonomous self‐regulation for college

    Open Access•Christopher P Niemiec, Martin F Lynch et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescence•2006

Using self‐determination theory, two studies investigated the relations among perceived need support from parents, their adolescents’ autonomous self‐regulation for academics, and the adolescents’ well‐being. Study 1 indicated that perceived need support from parents independently predicted adolescents’ well‐being, although when mothers’ and fathers’ data were examined separately, the relation was stronger for mothers than for fathers. In Study 2…

  • Religion's influence on culture and psychology

    Martin Lynch, Martin F Lynch•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•2001

Comments on E. Sampson's (see record 2001-16333-002) linking individualism and collectivism to religious origins. The author provides examples of cultures which are both Christian and collectivist, in contrast to what is predicted by Sampson's theory. The author draws upon comments made by L. S. Vygotsky on the culture of precommunist Russia to highlight the difficulty with abstracting the influence of religion on individualism and collectivism f…
