  • When to care? A Maihda analysis of intersectional inequalities in the age of caregiving onset using European longitudinal data

    Open Access•Enrique Alonso-Perez, Julie Lorraine O’sullivan et al.•ARTICLE•Ageing and Society•2026•References: 55

Care for older relatives is central in ageing societies, and the timing of caregiving onset significantly shapes caregivers’ health, social and employment trajectories. However, differences in the age at which family caregiving begins and their potential social and intersectional stratification have not been sufficiently explored. Using data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), we analysed individuals becoming daily…

  • Forgone Care of doctor's visits in Germany – Results from three cross-sectional surveys

Open Access•Christine Haeger, Raphael Kohl et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy•2025

BACKGROUND: Forgone care, defined as not using health care despite needing it, leads to adverse outcomes such as increased emergency care use. Our study uses data from German representative surveys (2016, 2021, 2022) to examine the frequency, demographics, and reasons for forgone care. METHODS: Multiple logistic regression models of individual cohorts and pooled data were used to assess the likelihood of forgoing a doctor's visit. Reasons for for…

  • Future Caregiving Responsibilities, Employment Uncertainties, and Expected Childbearing Behavior

Open Access•Vincent Jerald Ramos, Michaela Kreyenfeld et al.•ARTICLE•Population Research and Policy…•2025•References: 57

In societies experiencing declining birth rates, understanding factors that influence childbearing decisions is of interest. We used a factorial survey experiment to investigate how scenarios of future caregiving responsibilities toward aging parents and employment uncertainties shape the expected childbearing behavior of a fictitious couple. Respondents from the nationally representative German Socio-Economic Panel Innovation Sample (SOEP-IS) ( …

  • Decreased health service use among migrants improves through an internal locus of control, especially in men

    Open Access•Doreen Müller, Julie O’sullivan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2025•References: 51

We explore the role of internal locus of control (LOC), migration status and gender, in healthcare utilization, using the Andersen Model. It addresses the knowledge gap in understanding how these factors influence healthcare access, especially in migrant populations. Utilization was assessed using the 2020 German Socioeconomic Panel with 26,028 adults (6,968 migrants). In this cross-sectional survey study, four outcomes were analyzed via regressi…

  • Intersectional analysis of social disparities in type 2 diabetes risk among adults in Germany

    Open Access•Francesca Färber, Enrique Alonso-Perez et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Type 2 diabetes risk differed between intersectional strata and can to some extent be explained at strata level. The role of intersectional effects was minor and needs to be further investigated. Findings suggest a need for specific preventive measures targeted at large groups with increased diabetes risk, such as men and persons with low educational level

  • Intersectional Inequalities in the Transition to Grandparenthood and Cognitive Functioning

    Open Access•Enrique Alonso-Perez, Jan P Heisig et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2024•References: 13

This study highlights the importance of social determinants for understanding heterogeneities in older adults' level of cognitive functioning and its association with the transition to grandparenthood. Cumulative disadvantages negatively affect cognitive functioning, hence adopting an intersectional lens is useful to decompose inequalities and derive tailored interventions to promote equal healthy aging

  • Deaf and hard-of-hearing patients are unsatisfied with and avoid German health care

Open Access•Julia Rannefeld, Julie Lorraine O’sullivan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Overall, our findings suggest that DHH patients are unsatisfied with provided healthcare, they deliberately avoid doctor visits, and they face various communication barriers. This study revealed several communication-related determinants of satisfaction with healthcare in DHH patients, such as incidences of miscommunication and the communication score. Communication-related barriers have high potential to be addressed in collaboration with the DH…

  • Quality of life in people with dementia living in nursing homes

Open Access•Stefan Junge, Paul Gellert et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2020

We found that momentary quality of life, reliably assessed by tablet, was associated with comprehensive measures of quality of life and depressive symptoms in people with dementia. Broader use of tablet-based assessments within frequent QoL measurements may enhance time management of nursing staff and may improve the care quality and communication between staff and people with dementia
