Perceived burdensomeness, spiritual intelligence, and suicidal ideation: Implications for attitudes toward physician-assisted suicide in Korean Older Adults
This study investigates psychological factors influencing attitudes toward physician-assisted suicide (PAS) among Korean older adults, focusing on perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness as predictors of suicidal ideation. A survey of 200 adults aged 65 and over revealed that perceived burdensomeness significantly predicted suicidal ideation, mediating attitudes toward PAS, while thwarted belongingness had no significant effect. Spiri…

This study examined predictors of depression in a sample of 95 elderly Korean immigrants aged 60 or over. Depression among Korean immigrants was hypothesized to be associated with socio-demo-graphic and cultural factors, including health status, gender, education, financial status, acculturation level, familism, social support, especially from the family, and family relationships. A face-to-face interview was conducted in Korean using a structure…

This article presents a comparative analysis of chronic disease prevalence among older Koreans and non-Hispanic whites residing in Los Angeles County. The authors conducted a multivariate analysis that explores the impact of socioeconomic status, other sociodemographic variables, and social isolation on disease prevalence. The results reveal that while older Koreans have a higher prevalence of chronic kidney disease and diabetes, older non-Hispan…

The official health promotion goals for the year 2000 in the United States include an emphasis on behavioral and contextual changes to increase the healthy lifespan of Americans. The goals also encompass reducing disparities in health status among different groups, and many of the specific goals address issues pertinent to older people. Limited data on the health status and health behaviors of older Asians and Pacific Islanders contributed to the…

Analyzing Welfare Effort: An Appraisal of Comparative Methods
How do we measure and rate the social welfare efforts of nations? Most people consider the U.S. and Japan welfare laggards when compared with European countries. This view derives from a widely used measure of “welfare effort”-direct government outlays for social programs as the percentage of a nation's gross domestic product (GDP). This article challenges several assumptions implicit in the conventional measure and suggests an alternative approa…
